Coatings Formulation Scientist

The Coatings Formulation Scientist job exists to support the Advanced Materials business to achieve its short and long-term development objectives in support of its growth and profitability goals.  The incumbent helps the Advanced Materials Division execute their objectives by enabling basic sciences and creating product innovations.  In his/her area of expertise, the incumbent needs to understand the basic and advanced aspects of the field and apply this knowledge to develop innovative solutions to new products and concepts both in and outside the company.

More specifically this position will be responsible for developing and testing new high-performance material based on thermoset chemistry for Coatings and Construction applications.  This individual is expected to play a key role in creating competitive advantages through technical expertise and innovation.  This includes the creation of new formulations supporting new product development and product characterization for Coating and Construction applications.

As the Coatings Formulation Scientist, you will:

  • Conduct laboratory investigations to develop new product formulations and application technologies in the area of Coatings
  • Relies on depth of experiences and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks that require a high degree of creativity and latitude.  Generate original and imaginative ideas and solutions to solve coatings formulation challenges.  Generates options and alternatives that encourage different and unique ways of looking at things
  • Plans and conducts projects requiring judgment and independent evaluation, adaptation and modification of standard technique, procedure, and criteria. Participate in and complete company-required training programs.  Participate in Environmental, Health, & Safety initiatives as set forth by the company
  • There are 13 people in this group with plans for growing the group
  • Travel 10-15%
  • These projects run from 6 months for short term and up to 4 years for longer term projects. The breakdown is about 80% short term to 20% long term projects

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • Minimum of Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or equivalent knowledge in Thermoset Chemistry
  • Minimum 2-5 years industrial experience in thermoset polymer coating applications
  • Ability to independently define and execute experimental programs
  • Laboratory experience in industrial polymer area desirable
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously to meet timelines, deliverables, and objectives
  • Understanding of coating formulations, processing, properties, and applications
  • Excellent laboratory / mechanical skills and aptitude
  • Creative problem-solving ability; critical thinking and data analysis skills
  • Handling of toxic or caustic chemicals (with proper protective equipment) may occur between 50% and 50-75% of the time
