QA/QC Laboratory Manager

Innovative chemical technology company is looking for an experienced QA/QC Manager to oversee a team of approximately 25 analytical technicians.  Company is growing and offers fantastic benefits!  If you have 5+ years of Laboratory Manager experience in a regulated environment, experience implementing a LIMS system, are a stickler for details with strong leadership skills, this could be a great opportunity for you!

The Laboratory Manager (“Lab Manager”) reports to the Vice President of Technology (“VP Tech”), or in the VP Tech’s absence, to the Chief Technology Officer “CTO” or Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”).  The Lab Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a team of Laboratory Supervisors (“Lab Supervisors”) and other direct reports.  The Lab Manager will manage and direct the activities of his/her/their team, providing guidance and direction to direct reports and the lab operating team whose primary responsibility is the analysis of customer samples (the “Lab Team”), and acting as an escalation point for lab activities.

  1. Supervise all locations in which Lab Team operates, monitor work, provide guidance, and act as the Lab Supervisors’ escalation point of contact for all inquiries
  • Direct management and supervision of Lab Supervisors and other direct reports, as assigned
  • Ensure Lab Supervisors are effectively supervising and coordinating daily and weekly activities and duties of Lab Team
  • Ensure that all customer sample testing is completed on time
  • In coordination with Human Resources and with approval of one (1) executive team member, the Lab Manager shall have hiring and firing authority
  • Assist in resolving employee issues and disputes, partnering with Human Resources and Company leadership as needed
  • With Human Resources, review and approve Lab Team disciplinary documentation/actions
  • Provide technical support to Lab Team, as needed
  • Hold weekly team meetings to update Lab Supervisors on Company goals, communicate objectives, and monitor needs
  • Attend one (1) of each Lab Supervisor’s weekly team meetings per month
  • As the Company Safety Officer, approve agendas, assist Lab Supervisors in preparing monthly safety meeting information, and attend all safety meetings
  • As the Company Safety Officer, responsible for correctly updating all Injury & Illness Prevention Program (“IIPP”) and other regulatory policies, as required
  • With Lab Supervisors, ensure compliance with all safety requirements and other Company policies and procedures
  • Review all safety near-miss and incident reports; direct Lab Supervisors to conduct investigations into those near-misses or incidents that may require corrective action(s); review, approve, and ensure safety practices are implemented in response, as required
  • Perform semi-annual review of all direct reports, including each individual’s personalized plan
  • Review and approve Lab Supervisors’ semi-annual reviews of Lab Techs (and other direct reports, if any)
  • Monthly, meet with Lab Supervisors to review and approve training regimen of Lab Techs (and other direct reports, if any), identifying and supporting areas conducive to both individual employees’ and Company growth
  • Review for approval or denial all Lab Tech assay/assay set (“assay(s)”) qualifications and masteries recommended by Lab Supervisors
  • Identify and enable career advancement opportunities for Lab Supervisors
  • Identify, mentor, and train a qualified, high-performing individual as Lab Manager back-up
  • With Technology Director, maintain adherence to QC requirements for all lab work
  • Review all instances of Lab Techs that do not meet quality control and data standards (“QC Incident Reports”); with Technology Director, direct Lab Supervisors and QC Coordinator to conduct investigations into QC Incident Reports
  • With Technology Director, ensure lab instruments and equipment are properly maintained and in good working order
  • With QC Coordinator, approve monthly disposal of customer samples
  • Implement and manage a preventative maintenance program for the laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Set-up and maintain an instrumentation asset database to keep track of
    1. Instrument acquisition date and when we dispose of it.
    2. Instrument Maintenance (Preventative, Routine and Repairs and associated expenses).
  • Tracking instrumentation utilization (how many hours are the instruments effectively running).  This can help us to track when we are approaching 80% time from a 24/7 utilization base.  This serves as a benchmark of when to consider adding more instrumentation.
  1. Liaise with executive team
  • Attend scheduled Company leadership meetings
  • Advise executive team on requirements to meet customer testing workflow, including staff levels, skills, facilities, equipment, lab instrumentation, consumables, and other related needs
  1. Customer Interaction
  • With sales team members, attend customer calls, to include initial trial calls, initial test results calls, and others as needed
  • Prepare and send to customers on-time customer mass balance spreadsheets and test result reports
  • First point-of-contact for customer inquiries related to ongoing testing (SOP or sampling questions, scheduling, other)
  • With other employees when/as required, Lab Manager will act as the escalation point to hear, troubleshoot, and resolve customer testing and sampling problems
  1. Purchase Orders (“POs”)
  • Review for approval or denial all Lab Team related POs that fall within Lab Manager’s purchasing authority limit
  • For POs higher than Lab Manager purchasing authority, present and recommend approval or denial of POs to signing authority(-ies)
  1. Maintain accurate lab and data records in accordance with Company policies
  2. With Technology Director, responsible for integrating new procedures and/or methods into Lab Team workflow
  3. Lead special projects in support of expanding Company business lines (e.g., responding to regulatory information requests, evaluating new vendors or assays, researching new products, etc.)
  4. Ensure a hygienic work environment, participating in lab cleanliness, organization, and other tasks
  5. Perform duties in a safe manner, including complying with all safety, health, and environmental rules and regulations
  6. All other duties, as assigned by VP Technology, CTO, CEO, and other Company leadership

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • Minimum B.A./B.S. in lab sciences or similar field
  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience in a lab setting
  • Ability to develop, write, implement, and train others on Standard Operating Procedures (“SOP’s”)
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of HPLC’s, HSGC’s, and other equipment
  • Proficient in advanced algebraic and statistical calculations
  • Extensive knowledge of safe chemical handling procedures
  • Ability to read, follow, and train others on MSDS/SDS requirements
  • Extensive data analysis experience, including use of statistics and software calculation tools, Excel proficiency required
