Analytical Scientist, Chromatography

The Analytical Scientist, Chromatography will join a cross-functional team that is involved in analyzing fermentation substrates, active cultures and fermentation substrates, active cultures and fermentation products for the production of sustainable fuels and chemicals.  The key activities for this position include leading research, design, development, testing and implementation of analytical measurements critical for fermentation, synthetic biology and process and product validation.  This position will report directly to the Analytical Director.

  • Identification and development of new and improved analytical methodologies for fermentation broth, starting materials, products and biologic organisms which directly contribute to improved fermentation, process validation and new and improved biological syntheses
  • Lead projects using GC, GC-MS and reverse phase HPLC as primary tools making use of a variety of sampling techniques including SPE, SPME, absorbents and gas sampling
  • Understand R&D project analytical needs, interpret complex scientific data, and clearly communicate results to diverse stakeholders
  • Provide analytical team leadership with globally located multi-disciplinary projects for delivering high quality, timely, analytical data which help solve complex problems through the interaction with molecular biologists, bioprocess scientists and engineers both within company and on-site at commercial business partner and customer locations
  • Drive continuous improvement in methods to improve accuracy, throughput and reduce hands on time, investigate and benchmark worldwide best methodologies
  • Conduct feasibility experiments as needed to ensure the most appropriate analytical techniques are implemented to support project requirements
  • Participate and develop ongoing mentoring and other leadership skills with company team members
  • Author and review SOPs for laboratory analyses and maintenance of analytical instruments
  • Author presentations, patents and peer-reviewed journal articles relevant to company technology

  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related physical science or the equivalent in industry relevant experience
  • For a PhD, minimum of 5 years demonstrated hands on experience with development, validation, standardization and upkeep of quantitative analytical methods for GC, GCMS and HPLC preferably in an industrial research environment related to biotechnology, chemicals, oil and gas, or renewable energy
  • For a MS degree, 8 years required experience per above
  • For BS degree, 10 years required experience per above
  • Experienced with techniques used for aqueous sample preparation
  • Capable of independently developing and troubleshooting analytical methods
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving skills
  • Adaptable team player that thrives in a cutting edge, fast paced, entrepreneurial environment where priorities can change quickly
  • Strong experience in chromatography data systems, LIMS, data transfer and MS Office


  • Degree in analytical chemistry
  • Experience with a wide range of ‘conventional’ LC detectors (DAD, RID, conductivity, etc.) and GC detectors (FID, TCD, FPD, NPD, etc.)
  • Experience with gas sampling / analysis such as permanent gas analysis, thermal desorption and online gas analyzers
  • Knowledge of advanced GC techniques such as back flushing, PTV injection, SPME and 2D GC
  • Practical knowledge of titrations, spectroscopic techniques, IC and ICP
  • Expertise and fundamental understanding of other spectroscopic and chromatographic methods such as IR, fluorescence, Raman, UV/VIS and NMR
  • Experience with unstable compounds (thermally liable, easily hydrolyzed or oxygen sensitive)
  • Ability to travel nationally and internally as needed
