Assistant Controller

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Assistant Controller to support the Controller in overseeing the company's accounting operations within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The Assistant Controller will play a key role in financial reporting, cost accounting, budgeting, internal controls, and strategic financial planning. This position will partner closely with operations and executive leadership to identify cost-saving opportunities, improve financial performance, and support business growth.

The ideal candidate has a strong manufacturing accounting background, experience with cost accounting and inventory management, and a proven ability to drive process improvements and operational efficiencies.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Reporting

  • Assist in managing the daily operations of the accounting department, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and inventory accounting.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance.
  • Assist with annual audits, tax reporting, and regulatory compliance.

Manufacturing & Cost Accounting

  • Oversee standard costing, inventory valuation, bill of materials (BOM) accuracy, and manufacturing variances.
  • Analyze material, labor, and overhead costs to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Monitor inventory transactions, cycle counts, and physical inventories to ensure financial accuracy.
  • Partner with production and operations teams to improve manufacturing efficiencies and reduce operating costs.
  • Evaluate production performance and provide financial analysis to support operational decision-making.

Strategic Planning & Cost Savings

  • Identify, recommend, and implement cost-saving initiatives across manufacturing and corporate operations.
  • Develop financial models and profitability analyses to support strategic business decisions.
  • Participate in budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and provide actionable recommendations to improve profitability.
  • Support capital investment analyses and return-on-investment (ROI) evaluations for equipment, automation, and operational improvements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders to drive continuous improvement initiatives and operational excellence.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Assist in establishing departmental goals, performance expectations, and professional development plans.
  • Promote collaboration between Accounting, Operations, Supply Chain, Purchasing, and Production teams.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Controller and executive leadership on financial and operational matters

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • CPA or CMA certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a manufacturing environment.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, cost accounting, inventory accounting, and manufacturing financial processes.
  • Experience with ERP systems in a manufacturing environment (such as Epicor, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, Infor, or NetSuite).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including financial modeling, pivot tables, and data analysis.

Preferred Skills

  • Demonstrated success identifying and implementing cost reduction and operational improvement initiatives.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning and analysis (FP&A).
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, or Six Sigma principles is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
