Job Description

Associate Rubber Specialist

Performs complex laboratory operations under minimal supervision from senior staff members.  Ability to suggest alternative or supporting approaches within the scope of the laboratory operations conducted within the functional area.  Demonstrates critical thinking and problem-solving skills in material science and application technology.  Primary function is compounding and testing rubber and adhesive formulations.

Lab Process Work

  • Performs complex experiments under minimal supervision
  • Must be able to work and contribute in a team environment
  • Issues reports in verbal and written formats in a timely fashion and at specified intervals
  • Handles multiple assignments and coordinates with others
  • Assists in the maintenance, calibration, and repair of laboratory equipment
  • Develops proficiency in communication skills within functional unit
  • Able to independently operate the primary equipment in the application lab including basic troubleshooting and preventive maintenance skills
  • Knowledge in the operation of analytical instrumentation required for the project
  • Is knowledgeable of hazardous / non-hazardous waste generation practices
  • Maintains equipment in working order
  • Is knowledgeable of intra-plant hazardous / non-hazardous waste transportation practices
  • Independently conducts simple and routine analytical qualitative and quantitative chemical and physical
  • Operate analytical instrumentation such as RPA, Instron, DMA, etc.
  • Evaluates materials for compliance to standards and specifications
  • Maintains legible, neat and organized laboratory records

Maintaining Compliance

  • Adhere to company EH&S regulations, company Responsible Care practices and ISO 9000 programs
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory and working environment
  • Works with supervision to ensure data integrity and verify that their work is correct
  • Maintains established quality control documentation
  • Maintains a clean, safe and efficient laboratory environment and works safely within in
  • Accomplishes all EHS training requirements in accordance with their scheduling
  • Knowledgeable of hazardous / non-hazardous waste generation practices
  • Awareness of intra-plant hazardous / non-hazardous waste transportation practices
  • Evaluates materials for compliance to standards and specifications

Job Requirements


  • BS/MS degree in polymer chemistry or materials science with 3 or more years’ experience in the tire industry compounding and testing rubber formulations
  • Develops technical knowledge and ability within the functional area
  • Is aware of and adheres to all EHS & Q directives and maintains a zero, zero, zero record of compliance
  • Develops problem solving skills within the functional areas. Reviews and analyzes test results to identify and locate inconsistencies.  Makes fact-based decisions using supporting data.  Develops a thorough understanding of how problems are revealed in the data
  • Demonstrates clear and compelling actions to achieve business and performance objectives
  • Engages all stakeholders in a positive, energetic and productive way
  • Collaborates, supports and leverages the strengths of others to accomplish individual, team and company goals
