Associate Scientist II

The Associate Scientist II, Product Development position is part of the Research, Development, and Quality group supporting nutritional products at the company.  Work will cover a range of product development activities from innovation to commercialization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities to include:

  • Lead the development of new and improved products, including prototype development, experimentation, product testing, data analysis, documentation and reporting
  • Lead commercialization, including pilot trials and scale-ups
  • Organize raw materials, maintain ingredient inventory, and keep lab area and equipment operational
  • Qualification of new raw materials and maintenance of existing raw materials
  • Develop specifications in PLM system for raw materials, formulas and finished products
  • Represent R&D in key cross-functional meetings, and collaborate with Marketing, Regulatory, Quality, and Operations to support business initiatives, Quality and Supply Chain
  • Define product design to meet consumer requirements, including identifying product evaluation parameters and leading internal and external consumer testing
  • Execute experimental design, and shelf-life studies. Interpret and deliver results to both R&D and cross-functional teams
  • Support ownable product designs through the use of IP management and ensure ‘Freedom to Operate’ working with internal legal counsel
  • Proactively define, develop, and implement product improvement initiatives and cost savings opportunities
  • Identify novel ingredients, and investigate nutritional and functional impact
  • Act as subject matter expert on key products; mentor and provide coaching for junior team members

  • BS in Food Science preferred
  • 3-6 years of product development experience
  • Proven track record of success in product development process, from concept to commercialization
  • Strong knowledge of ingredient functionality, product evaluation, health and nutrition, food manufacturing processes, microbiology, quality assurance principles, and market research practices
  • Ability to influence technical direction of projects and provide direction for business strategy
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on cross-functional teams
  • Ability to rapidly and effectively respond to changes in project scope and focus
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, complex projects with overlapping timelines
  • Strong drive for results and execution ability
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral, and ability to work effectively with teams
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
