Chief Toxicologist

The Chief Toxicologist will serve as company’s toxicology and product safety subject matter expert and provides strategic leadership to company’s human and environmental hazard, risk and exposure assessment of company chemical products to all regions and portfolios.  This position is part of the company Research and Development team and reports into the Global Chemistry Lead for Strategic Regulatory Affairs & Microbiology and also partners with Marketing and Supply Chain.  Key responsibilities to include:

  • Provide strategic leadership to company with respect to toxicology and product safety to enable a strategic advantage of company compared to competition
  • Identify and initiate opportunities to participate in industry groups to realize and/or enhance corporate objectives / improvements, and to bolster the credibility of the company in the regulated community
  • Deliver expert human and environmental hazard, risk and exposure assessment of company chemical products to all regions and portfolios
  • Serve as toxicology and product safety subject matter expert supporting all business functions as well as key customer concerns associated with the health and environmental impact of the company’s chemical products, ingredients and equipment
  • Develop safety-related statements and/or other documentation for internal or external distribution
  • Establish company standards and policies with respect to product formulation and acceptable chemical use to mitigate risk, deliver improved hazard profiles and leverage safety and compliance as a strategic advantage, establishes Technical Safety Reviews with other peers on innovations
  • Represent Company’s business interests by actively participating in professional associations, industry and governmental groups to influence the development of new legislation policies and standards to achieve results in the company’s favor on key issues
  • Continuously strive to identify solutions which improve safety profiles while advancing knowledge of toxicology and safety through technology review for a safety perspective to support R&D professionals in all regions in their efforts to deliver product maintenance, innovation and other new technology projects to the company business to facilitate frequent contact with business, regulatory and Toxicology peers within company as well as in other companies, government agencies and industry groups
  • Provides strategic direction and leadership to other regulatory staff and internal business partners such as R&D, marketing and supply chain to ensure that activities and programs all meet applicable regulatory requirements and support the company’s strategic and operational initiatives
  • Coaches and mentors other technical and regulatory staff
  • Ability to travel, domestic and international, up to 20%

Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering or related field
  • Background of Senior Stewardship and significant corporate level oversight. Not a seasoned research person
  • 10+ years of experience in a Corporate product toxicology environment
  • Certification by American Board of Toxicology (DABT) or other equivalent health science certification, or willingness to sit for such certification
  • In depth knowledge of complex toxicology principles and physiology, such as acute toxicity, carcinogenicity and developmental toxicity and principles of risk and exposure assessment
  • Working knowledge of product registration and compliance requirements for antimicrobial pesticide, medical devices, OTC drugs, food safety and cosmetic regulations in the US, Canada and Europe
  • Working knowledge of health, safety, packaging, labeling and transportation regulations that apply to industrial chemicals and formulated products in North America, Europe and other regions
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and programs such as FDA, USDA, FSMA and HACCP
  • Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills facilitating the preparation of technical presentations to customers, regulatory authorities and scientific bodies as well as internal communication at all levels of the company on matters of expertise
  • Demonstrated ability to set aggressive goals and timetables to execute those goals
