Coatings Application Scientist, Transportation

The Coatings Application Scientist, Transportation will have the following responsibilities:

  • Works with cross-functional teams to advance projects
  • Engages customers in the Automotive Coatings value chain for discovery and alignment of development interests
  • Builds relationships within customer organizations
  • Generates and analyzes data in a laboratory setting to support customer aligned R&D
  • Prepares and presents information for technical, business, and customer audiences
  • Identifies customer unmet needs and translates them into actionable applications development activity
  • Develops new tests to support applications development
  • Formulates coatings to meet customer CTQ requirements
  • Applies coatings to panel substrates using drawdown and spray techniques
  • Performs applications testing to validate value propositions
  • Identifies coatings defects and determines root cause
  • Has a working knowledge of polyester and acrylic polyol structure / process / property relationships
  • Works with product development / synthesis colleagues to identify resin modifications needed to meet CTQ

Requirements:

  • MS/PhD in Polymer Science, Coatings Science, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering is required, Ph.D. is preferred
  • Technical project leadership experience with proven track record of developing and executing on Transportation Coatings strategies
  • Downstream connect with can makers and brand owners in the Transportation segment
  • Good understanding of the regulatory trends in the Transportation segment
  • Strong background in formulation, application and testing of coatings
  • Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with and as a part of a cross-functional team
  • Experience with experimental design (DOE), formulation, and problem solving are desired
  • An understanding of chemical manufacturing as it relates to resin, polymers or coatings is desirable
  • Knowledge of waterborne and solve borne coatings technology is highly preferred
  • Working knowledge of thermally cured coatings, i.e. coil coatings / laminates / baking enamels is required
  • Excellent judgment and relational abilities. Able to collaborate with peers of various technical backgrounds and fields of expertise to enable effective product development
  • Must demonstrate excellence around professional follow-through and achieving timely closure on issues and assignments. Must be customer focused and have leadership potential
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Previous project leadership in an industrial setting is preferred
  • Quickly assimilates new information
  • High level of motivation, initiative and sense of urgency
  • Flexible to provide first-hand presence and effective support in multiple labs and facilities
  • Complete fluency in English, including good verbal and written technical communications
