Corrosion/Scale Inhibitor Formulation Technology Leader

Stable organization with significant growth in Chicago is looking for a hands-on Technology Leader with a strong mix of hands-on laboratory leadership and strategic vision.  This role is highly visible within the organization, works cross-functionally, and has organizational impact.  The ideal candidate will be someone who has strong corrosion technology formulation knowledge and the ability to mentor and develop research teams.  The organization is very customer focused and has a culture that treats each employee as an invaluable asset.

The main responsibilities will include:

  • Develop strategic objectives and operating plan to support company’s research and development strategies.
  • Provide leadership and direction to others within the organization for solving complex problems.
  • Undertakes lead position in directing both long-term and short-term research projects in the laboratories. 
  • Identification of innovative product solutions to meet customer and market needs, as a strategic driver for business growth.
  • Provide direction for laboratory bench work required to ensure continued improvement and success of the existing coolant and anti-corrosive product lines.
  • Individual laboratory research to create and test formulations for future innovative products including:

           - Formulation performance testing

           - Developing new corrosion inhibitor formulations

           - Development of blending procedures to create blends for customers.   

  • In the research and development processes offer reporting data to support the ROI analysis for new product offerings.
  • Evaluate currently used research tools to ensure that company is always aware of useful emerging technology.
  • Collaborate with managers from other market segments to optimize the utilization of all research areas in order to reach business objectives.
  • Direct communication with customers will be required to offer technical support as they work with our chemistries within their organizations.  
  • Be available for direct customer interface to understand their requirements in dealing with application work. 
  • Customer interaction will be required with both the domestic and international markets.
  • Administer the planning and supervision of research projects for all scientific activity.
  • Be available to interact with the other research labs for all unique market segments.  
  • Collaborates on patent applications and manuscripts for publication.
  • Always keep safety in the forefront of laboratory processes and convey this philosophy to your team members.
  • Develop and assist in management and optimization of Key Performance Indicator’s (KPI). 
  • Assist in the long-term facility planning processes to ensure the manufacturing capabilities are in place to meet sales growth forecasts.
  • Perform annual reviews of key lab personnel.
  • Be instrumental in initiating the recruiting process for new laboratory staff members.

Qualification needed for this position:

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry (Organic, Inorganic or Organometallic), PhD preferred
  • 7+ years’ experience in Research and Development
    • Corrosion science, corrosion inhibition, corrosion inhibitors, corrosion testing
    • Solution Chemistry; synthesis, molecular structures, reactivity and stability
    • Electrochemistry
  • Work effectively with MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook
  • Handle chemicals safely
  • Perform laboratory testing following prescribed procedures 
  • Perform light duty work
  • Some travel will be required, approximately 20%
