Cosmetic R&D Chemist III
Job Description
Base salary $70,000-$90,000 in base salary annually based on experience

Personal care and cosmetics manufacturer in the Chicago area is seeking a R&D Chemist to work across all brands and products, global and international. Collaborate with multiple departments including sales, marketing, purchasing, packaging, QA/QC, and production.
- Successfully formulate and scale up a variety of formulation types.
- Has a good understanding of the physical, chemical, biological, microbiological, engineering, and regulatory aspects for the development and technology transfer process.
- Proficient understanding of formulation laboratory equipment (e.g., mixers, hotplates, balances, pH meters, viscometers, filling equipment, lipstick molds etc.) and its impact during technology transfer.
- Deep understanding of the production equipment capabilities and its impact on the formulation for the types mastered.
- Proficient understanding of raw materials and chemical compatibility used for formulation development while proficiently applying it to predict the overall final product's physical and chemical properties.
- Propose solutions when working with vendors to address raw material issues.
- Consistently maintains accurate documentation of formulation, procedures, results, data, and conclusions.
- Apply brand heart concepts and consumer product usage trends during product development and raw material selection.
- Keeps up with new industry trends.
- Good understanding of the concepts involved in assessing stability of OTC drug and consumer products.
- Proficient in the application of physical and sensory test data for formulation development.
- Able to propose investigative testing when troubleshooting formulation issues.
- Proficient in analyzing technical data or qualitative feedback.
- Can independently make recommendations based upon analysis.
- Understands the physical, chemical microbiological concepts, and regulatory requirements involved in the assessment of OTC drug and consumer products.
- Independently prepares formulation spreadsheets and accurately completes complex calculations related to formula development.
- Demonstrated ability to design experiments to understand or solve formulation issues.
- Knowledgeable in the application of statistics.
- Demonstrated ability to make recommendations using data generated from experiments.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully transfer complex information to Quality and Operations groups and successfully manage the information process.
- Demonstrated ability to solve problems encountered when "scaling up" formulations.
- Good understanding of the problems that often occur during scale up due to differences in the impact of the physical forces that are experienced in the laboratory versus the manufacturing plant.
- Proficiently understands and applies OTC drug monograph and cosmetic regulations to formulation development and ingredients selection.
- Demonstrated understanding of the impact of federal, state, global and local regulations on the product life cycle and formulation development.
- Fully integrates cGMP regulations and concepts to the product development process.
- Knowledge of current US, EU, and global regulations, ICH guidance and relevant standards and quality requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to suggest raw materials and active ingredients to support product claims.
- Understands the role of the OTC drug monograph system in product development.
- Understands a variety of common clinical test protocols and when they are used during product development.
- Can develop or review protocols for claims support studies.

Job Requirements
- Degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related scientific discipline with 8-10 years of applicable laboratory experience preferable in the cosmetics or pharmaceutical OTC industry.
- Consistently demonstrates good mathematical ability and analytical skills. Accurately calculates percentages, formula costs, and applies basic statistics. Applies concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Performs spreadsheet mathematical and graphical analysis.
- Proficiency with computers and in Microsoft programs including Outlook, Word, Power Point and Excel
- Ability to learn new software such as ELN and Regulatory Documentation programs.
- Understands and follows appropriate lab safety practices.
- Accepts other duties, as assigned.
- Travel, up to 5%, depending upon business need.
