Job Description

Development Chemist – Metalworking

The Development Chemist provides technical support for Production, Customer Service, Marketing, and Sales.  This person has a primary responsibility to support the development of new products and formulations, and to support efforts to continually improve existing products.  In addition, the Development Chemist is involved in providing troubleshooting and Quality Control services for Production.  Job functions include project management, new product formulations and product adjustments, laboratory measurements (wet and instrumental), and data entry and analysis.  He/she is responsible for providing a safe and clean work environment and for maintaining accurate and timely records.  All activities are performed in the spirit of teamwork and cooperation practiced at the company.

New Product Development

  • Prepare and develop new laboratory formulations
  • Conduct stability and applications testing on formulations
  • Recommend alternate raw materials or procedures for formulating new products
  • Provide test results for internal and competitive products

Production Support

  • Obtain data to aid in the solution of problems during batch manufacture
  • Aid in the assessment and handling of non-conforming products
  • Blending products in the laboratory to aid in the development of specifications and procedures
  • Maintain and analyze retains of new formulations
  • Maintain pH meter and other instrumentation in the plant as specified

Quality Control

  • Team with production personnel to assure the quality to company products
  • Provide information from laboratory work that will allow the writing of blend instructions
  • Establish control parameters for products (pH, viscosity, etc.)

Distributor Technical Support

  • Analyze field samples using wet and instrumental methods
  • Perform analyses to aid in the determination of the composition of competitive products
  • Formulate product samples

Technical Competence

  • Provide accurate and timely results
  • Keep aware of new developments, procedures, and instrumentation
  • Consultative with suppliers to obtain information necessary for job functions

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related engineering field
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a product development role with lubricants: 5 years minimum experience in formulating water dilutable metal removal products, metal cleaners & corrosion preventatives is ideal
  • Knowledge of the operating principles of analytical instrumentation, including its capabilities and limitations, used to analyze metalworking fluid samples for specific actives, contaminants, etc.

Technical Competence:

  • Knowledge of cutting and grinding processes ideal
  • Knowledge of metallurgy
