Director of Applications, Lab and Tech Service Americas

Position Summary  

The person will lead both laboratory and field-based sales technical service teams to deliver technical solutions and prototypes with existing products in short term TSR opportunities that are customer driven and generated by the sales and regional marketing teams. The role will be filled by an experienced food chemist, food engineer, or person with a degree in a closely related technical field.  The role will provide technical and applications R&D support for various customer driven projects and tasks including leading a team to conduct formulation support, customer complaint product performance investigation, prototype development and demonstration samples, and technical training of the Sales and Technical Service team.  Additionally, the person will lead the two field-based technical service managers: one in North America and one in Latin America to help drive a strong opportunity funnel and a customer-centric model for growth.    A key aspect of this role will be to work with the technical service organization to provide support for Technical Service Requests (TSR) using an integrated CRM system (customer relationship management).  The role will support customers and technical service managers in multiple regions to support distributors channel partners, enterprise and growth partner direct accounts including multinational companies.


Dimensions of Job/Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Manages and coordinates tasks of laboratory team and allocates resources to short term projects.
  • Works closely with innovation function, applications development group and platform product managers to translate customer needs if solution cannot be completed as a TSR. 
  • Manages team to drive and support Technical service requests and deliver wins for the commercial group.
  • Drives and develops a strong opportunity funnel.
  • Initiate and support new development projects for customers.
  • Turn new developments into successful commercial projects to meet profitable growth.
  • Work together with Sales to manage and develop regional opportunity pipeline
  • Individual contributor with high level of knowledge in area of hydrocolloids and food applications.
  • Will lead and supervise a team or technical project.
  • Has a clear understanding of Customer Value Creation (CVC) principals and drives to understand and articulate VOC (Voice of Customer) and VOM.
  • Supports enterprise, growth partners, direct core accounts and distributor partners. 
  • Works closely with regional marketing to understand emerging trends and company response.
  • Understands competitive products and most likely alternatives, by application area.
  • Understands food systems beyond hydrocolloids such as proteins, starches, fats, thermal processing and shelf-life requirements.
  • Working knowledge and experience in GMP and microbiology.
  • Develops and applies knowledge for used to implement and/or improve tools, techniques and work processes.
  • Solves problems and issues requiring high level of technical knowledge and consideration of other disciplines.
  • Proactively identifies problems and develops solutions.
  • Serves on teams focused on highly complex or specialized projects.
  • Influences and/or convinces others within the organization to reach agreement and accept new practices and approaches.
  • Provide training on company hydrocolloids to Sales and Technical Service teams.
  • Works with others within a specified activity, project, business and/or technical area.
  • Will direct, motivate and challenge experienced scientists with advanced technical degrees and technical service managers

  • Master’s degree in Food science or Dairy/Food Engineering
  • Minimum of 7-12 years of experience in product development and within a market-facing, technical support role.
  • Has managed a laboratory-based team of scientists and technologists in the food or beverage industry.
  • Sound knowledge of hydrocolloid products, processes and applications
  • Proven business acumen and ability to transform commercial needs into technical programs and to drive those for execution.
  • Ability to manage an opportunity pipeline and drive commercial wins.
  • Ability to build customer relationship and understand customers business strategy and goals. 
  • Knowledge of company’s business, its business processes and internal procedures is required.
  • Good project leadership skills, especially to outline initial scoping stages of projects and complete proof of concept stage.
  • Effectively work through others to accomplish key objectives and fulfill responsibilities, communicate ideas, instructions and information in a clear, understandable manner.
  • Creative and innovative mind and a can-do attitude.
  • Good interpersonal skills and written communication. Effective presentational skills
  • Ability to lead and work according to Huber principles and values.
  • Experience in managing several cost centers
  • Knowledge using a CRM system for customer relationships.
  • Experienced in managing people, developing annual goals and objectives for team.
  • Proven track record in building a team, hiring talent and effective succession planning.
