Director of Innovation and Quality

The Director of Innovation & Quality is responsible for leading efforts involved in new product / process development and improvements projects.  This position leads the customer development effort by combining technical product and application knowledge with business acumen to win customers through understanding what their customers need to accomplish and providing data to enable customers to meet their brand inspirations.  This position initiates, evaluates, plans, directs, executes and reports on activities related to the development of new products, improvements or cost savings ideas.  This position also carries the responsibility to mentor team members, grow their skills and competencies for contributing to the organization.

*Initiates, develops and implements new product development, process improvements, and cost savings projects working with customers across Industrial and Retail product lines

*Go to person on technical information for customers, plants, procurement, on ingredients, formulations and processing issues

*Complete technical assessments for evaluation of new products from ideation to commercialization

*Establishes and monitors the projects pipeline review and prioritization system for the R&D as a key link with the sales team and manages project load based on resource allocation

*Strong project management capability and ability to manage multiple projects across multiple customers

*Responsible for commissioning new products in the plant working with procurement, plant operations, Sales, customer service & Plant QA teams

*Interacting with customers with respect to product quality issues or quality improvement initiatives

*Reviewing and approving recipes, design of thermal process and labels used to ensure compliance with all regulatory labeling requirements

*Strong understanding of high acid thermal processing regulations, methods and ability to design and manage thermal processing requirements for the business.  This will include Aseptic processing, canned products and products packed in glass jars and other rigid containers

*Filing and maintaining customer specifications, link the same to BU specifications and operating knowledge transfer system and ensure the specifications are supported by the appropriate information and documents at the factory floor level at the operating units to be able full traceability

*Assisting in continuous improvement initiatives that reduce manufacturing costs, improve quality and/or enhance customer service

*Develops novel ingredients, fresh vegetables working with vendors and procurement team

*Strong business acumen and validate cost / benefit analysis to engage in projects with sales and product line management team

*Be the technical coordinator for Organic program, Kosher, Non-GMO & Allergen Free programs on a yearly basis

*Understand and operate the BU’s enterprise resource platform SAP for data and generate information / insight from the data

*Support 2 operating plants as a technical coordinator as and when required for programs and audits

*Mentoring staff to improve skills and competencies to enable next level for succession planning and potential contribution to the company

*Good business acumen and ability to understand the link of product / process and quality to commercial value in the business

*Degree in Food Science & Technology / Chemistry / Engineering

*Minimum of 15-20 years of Product Development / R&D experience – from concept to commercialization

*At least 5 years of managerial experience in tomato/vegetable, high acid product lifecycle management

*Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to thermal processing and labeling including FSMA and FALCPA

*Strong knowledge in food chemistry, formulation development with tomato ingredients, fresh vegetables and food ingredients used in sauces, salsas, viscosity modifiers, and ingredient interactions with high temperature processing

*Good understanding of thermal processing basics, experience working with process authorities, regulatory and customer thermal processing experts

*Excellent ability to accurately write specifications, decks & knowledge transfer dockets and documents

*Strong business acumen and demonstrate business knowledge by leading discussion and direction on project work with the organization and determining effects of department work on total financial picture

*Strong written and verbal communication skills and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

*Strong leadership and ability to interact effectively with various functions, customers, and experience in a large team environment

*Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite application and ability to communicate by presentations

*MUST be willing to travel as needed (20-25%)

*Knowledge of tomato processing, aseptic bulk processing, retail branded products
