Director of Product Development

This position is primarily responsible for leading and managing company’s technical product development effort.  This includes new formulations, reformulating existing products and managing the development of product formulas with contract partners.  It also includes the management of an R&D lab and building product samples, as well as being the technical voice of the management team.  Other responsibilities will also arise to fulfill overall business objectives.

  • Design and formulate dietary supplement products for internal and external customers
  • Network through tradeshows, vendor visits and seminars to stay apprised of innovative product ideas and new technologies
  • Provide scientific support to other departments
  • Help set raw and finished good specifications
  • Evaluate the safety, quality and efficacy of ingredients
  • Support the piloting and manufacturing of products when needed
  • Develop Supplement Facts panels when needed
  • Support the development of strategic initiatives for product lines and product updates
  • Demonstrated ability to develop systems and processes or improve existing processes within and across departments to improve efficiency and profitability
  • Project management: demonstrated ability to use sound planning and consistent execution
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills, along with a strong aptitude to work with and manage within cross-functional teams

Requirements:

  • MS or PhD in a life-science-related field, preferably nutrition, food science, or related field
  • 5+ years’ experience in product development and formulation
  • Knowledgeable in dietary supplements, powder capsules and natural products
  • Experienced in creating innovative new products or improving on existing ideas
  • Knowledgeable in supporting projects from inception through launch
  • Networked with raw material vendors, formulation and flavor houses, and other industry contacts
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent people and communication skills: Must be able to work well within a cross-functional team
