Director of R&D

The Director of R&D is a key leadership position within the company; the person in this role will provide leadership for R&D activities required to support the company retail dressings, dips, sauces business plan.  The Director will support brand teams grow current business while building capabilities within R&D.  The Director R&D will have responsibility for the planning, staffing and execution of innovation projects from concept to commercialization including oversight of process and package development.  The Director will have responsibility to 1) set and deliver cost reduction objectives, 2) deliver against food safety and quality expectations, and 3) support the mergers and acquisitions efforts of company.

Essential functions / primary responsibilities:

  • Commercialize products with excellence; meet timelines for key development milestones, ensure product food safety and quality
  • Leverage internal and external resources where needed to advance and commercialize initiatives (e.g. engineering, supply chain, R&D, tech services, packaging, co-mans, suppliers)
  • Provide the catalyst to develop and advance new product and platform ideas in support of long term business strategy; drive innovation through developing solutions that company consumers and customers value
  • Ensure new products meet financial expectations for costs (raw material, packaging, production) to support the business P&L for new products
  • Build and develop collaborative partnerships with the Innovation Team as well as retail marketing, sales, operations & finance teams
  • Lead the development and delivery of annual goals for the retail R&D team. Work with brand leadership teams in preparing annual goals, developing specific plans, and establishing priorities and objectives for the business
  • Builds and executes plans to develop strong technical talent to deliver current and future business as well as provide talent development to the broader organization
  • Develop and manage relevant R&D budget
  • Builds morale across teams by providing clear direction, recognition and positive feedback
  • Identifies new trends relevant to the industry, make recommendations to marketing, customer and sales teams, and turn them into actionable platforms
  • Collaborates with RD&Q leadership to manage the delivery of new technologies, products and applications required to achieve business plans
  • Proactively engages the right resources in setting goals and delivering results. Lead indirectly, through influence and personal example
  • Identifies and implements best practices into the organization and recognizes and promotes new ideas

Requirements:

  • BS or MS Degree in Food Science, Chemical Engineering or related field
  • 10+ years of experience with new product and process development in food
  • An advanced understanding of the key scientific principles associated with food systems, and ingredient and ingredient / process interactions including preservation systems in food to prevent spoilage and enable safety
  • Demonstrated capability to manage and prioritize multiple priorities
  • Demonstration of strong communication skills
  • Ability to lead technical projects and work effectively in cross functional teams
  • Understands leadership development and has demonstrated leadership growth in career
  • Track record of leading others successfully
