Environmental Specialist

The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for coordinating, leading, implementing, and supporting the environmental compliance and permitting programs across company operations, particularly focusing on air permitting and compliance activities.  This specialist will interface with all levels of company employees and will develop and implement plans and processes that meet critical environmental, compliance and business objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directly manage waste program at Facility. This includes scheduling shipments, waste tracking, waste characterization, waste reporting, waste minimization, cost reduction inspections, compliance, contractor management, and waste training
  • Evaluate processes/procedures to manage environmental issues and incorporates strong operational controls and environmental roles and responsibilities into existing facilities and individual job functions; advises in the setting objectives / targets for managing environmental issues
  • Development and maintenance of current and future environmental programs including ISO14001
  • Assist in the day to day management of the environmental affairs of the Facility
  • Conduct multi-media environmental audits and/or tabletop environmental reviews
  • Assist in EPA and IEPA / IDEM reporting requirements such as SARA 311/312/313, spill reporting, etc.
  • Develop environmental compliance plans such as SPCC, SWPP, RCRA contingency plans
  • Assist in Environmental training activities as necessary. This includes training development and presentations
  • Deliver technical project work in the areas of air quality and environmental compliance (e.g. water waste, emergency planning)
  • Prepare permit applications, perform PSD analyses, develop emissions inventories / calculations, complete regulatory reviews, and develop air permitting strategies
  • Assist in miscellaneous EHS Department tasks – i.e., MOC, document management, et al. as needs arise
  • Oversee operations emergency response program
  • Assist in Process Safety Management activities as necessary
  • Knowledge and application of environmental regulations, compliance, and permitting programs, specifically Clean Air Act, NSPS, NESHAP, NSR, EPA, IEPA.

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental sciences, or related field preferred
  • Alternate: Associates Degree and five years equivalent work experience with emphasis in Environmental, Health & Safety
  • 3-5 years of experience in the environmental profession
  • Professional safety certification preferred such as CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), CHSP (Certified Healthcare Safety Professional), CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), CPE (Certified Professional Ergonomist) or similar years of environmental, chemical or safety experience required
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure appropriate flow of information
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries, and/or complaints
  • Displays courtesy, tact and respect when dealing with others
