Formulation Chemist
Leading specialty chemical company is looking for an experienced formulation chemist to join their R&D team in Phoenix. The ideal candidate would have experience in formulating water-based systems (coatings, inks, adhesives, cosmetics, etc.). Great team, brand new lab!
The Chemist conducts R&D and product development projects for the Product Development department of the company. He/she works closely with other members of the technical team to design experiments, develop paint and coating formulations, and test them according to standard protocols. He/she collects and reports data and ensures experiments are conducted in an accurate, complete, and efficient manner. Fundamental skills for the role include ability to communicate effectively, organizational skills, team-work, and observational skills. All work shall be performed with adherence to the company’s environmental, health, and safety (EHS) policies and procedures.
- The Chemist will have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the practices, concepts, and procedures as it relates to the design, making, and performance testing of paint and coatings formulations
- He/she operates independently and with mentorship and guidance from experienced members of the technical team to understand and execute project assignments in a timely manner
- Develops a thorough knowledge of coating raw materials, formulation science, and experimental design.
- Builds a strong understanding of the company’s products and capabilities, the competitive landscape, and market trends and needs
- Occasionally mentors, trains, and directs the work of Technicians and Associate Chemists
- Maintains good records, prepares project presentations, and communicates experimental results to the technical team as necessary
- Reviews opportunities for process and product improvements with the Group Leader
- Creates and maintains an orderly and professional workspace with adherence to good housekeeping practices
- Participates in safety inspections ands conduct all work in a manner consistent with safety best practices

Job Requirements
Technical Qualifications:
- BS/MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field
- Minimum of 4 years of industry experience formulating architectural or other water-based coatings
- Experience with successful new product development and commercialization
- Demonstrated track record/examples of innovation
- Experience with Six Sigma and/or Stage Gate processes a plus
- Experience with design of experiments (DOE) statistical methods preferred
