Lab Manager – Metalworking Fluids

Technical management position requiring demonstrated supervisory capabilities that combine people, planning, coaching, mentoring, & budgetary skills.  Accountable for team, provides direction & support to team members and works closely with Technical Management, Business, Sales, & Marketing to support both short- & long-term business goals.

Directly supervise QC and technical service laboratory employees.  Responsible for establishing, implementing, and directing Quality Control (QC) and technical service (TS) effort to ensure that the requirements for processing raw materials into finished goods conform to company quality standards.  Responsible for Quality Control (QC) and technical service (TS) effort to ensure that the products or services of company meet external and internal requirements, including customer expectations and legal compliance.  This position requires setting up and managing undefined, rotating eight-hour shifts to cover the 24-hour period of each day and night, Monday through Friday, as needed to maintain production.  Key duties include the following:

  • Capable of high-performance project management
  • Able to understand the chemical nature of generic and company specific component technology and how they affect performance in our areas of application
  • Understands fluid parameters that impact upon product performance
  • Guides Sales and Marketing in technology and applications
  • Aware of the purpose for using design of experiment techniques
  • Supervise lab employees; Includes maintaining work schedule, approving weekly timecards, providing necessary training, selecting employees as required. Counsel employees and document performance including semi-annual performance reviews
  • Ensure all lab practices are performed in accordance to company’s Safety and Quality Policies and Procedures
  • Troubleshoot analytical methods to ensure accuracy and to reduce method variability
  • Develop and analyze repeatability data and general statements for Lab methods, including necessary KPI’s for monthly manufacturing score card
  • Establish and maintain in quality assurance standards, procedures, and controls: Work directly with supply to schedule and control inspection activities to enforce requirements of specified raw materials, ingredients, products, and any other regulated specifications, and regulatory agencies involved (QP&G/ISO)
  • Prepare annual budget for direct costs, manpower and expenditures. Ensure Lab operates within budget.  Prepare reports documenting Lab performance
  • Undertake root cause analysis to address quality issues and provide effective corrective actions

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and 10 or more years of relevant experience
  • Formulating experience with metalworking fluids, cleaners, corrosion inhibitors
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of analytical methods and instrumentation
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control techniques
  • Ability to simultaneously organize and supervise a wide variety of projects and tasks
  • Ability to cope with workplace stress
  • Must pass Department of Homeland Security background check, pre-placement physical and preemployment drug screen
  • Metalworking company/industrial lubricant experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Essential supervisory skills to foster team environment
  • Experience in determining root cause analysis and providing corrective action and/or preventative action within a set of regulated specifications
  • Experience of working within batch chemical manufacturing environment
  • Computer literate, excellent IT skills and ability to understand different systems
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and multitask
  • Flexible and adaptable
