Lab Manager

The Lab Manager will direct the lab supervisor, analytical chemists and lab technicians to find solutions to plant problems, improve processes, ensure product quality, and support environmental requirements.  Additionally, the manager will develop methods to foster effective communication and collaboration with the operations groups.  Lastly, the manager will determine staffing and equipment needs to develop basic research functionality in the main lab.

  • Manage functioning lab supervisor, analytical chemists and lab technicians (mix of exempt and non-exempt)
  • Provides direct report(s) clear goals and responsibilities and performs biannual performance evaluations
  • Conduct formal and informal meetings with lab personnel and operations as needed to foster collaboration and communication
  • Improve lab quality systems, lab practices and ISO compliance documentation
  • Develop KPIs and communication pathways to improve customer service performance and meet timelines
  • Develop an analytical support request process that clearly outlines customer and chemist expectations
  • Identify needs for new technologies that streamline existing sample analyses or will boost lab technical capabilities
  • Provides consultation for analytical method development
  • Determine equipment and staffing needs for TBD research capabilities
  • Provides analytical solutions to manufacturing troubleshooting, new projects and process improvements
  • Conduct root cause analysis and provide timely response to customer complaints

Requirements:

  • Minimum of ten years of management experience and experience leading a multidiscipline workforce
  • Minimum of three years laboratory management experience
  • Minimum three years of analytical chemistry experience
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with 7+ years’ experience
  • Master’s in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering; PhD in Organic Chemistry preferred
  • Strong organizational skills; strong communication skills (both oral & written)
  • Ability to streamline people, tasks and processes
  • Must have a customer-focused mindset
  • Ability to foster an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration
  • Current knowledge of laboratory analytical instruments and techniques; strong experience in analytical techniques especially with method development and multiple analyte calibration
  • Strong proponent of scientific method for the solution of process and analytical problems; “Can do” attitude along with sense of urgency on solving problems
