Lead Coatings Chemist
Lead Chemist role in an established company. This role is part of a new business group with career growth opportunities. Requires include a scientific degree and industry experience developing coatings to commercialization. Relocation package available.
Based in Springfield, Oregon R&D laboratory, the Lead Coatings Chemist will be a key member in Fire Safety application development projects. The successful candidate will plan and drive the execution of Technical Service and NPD projects, particularly targeting the western region for the Fire Safety business unit.
Job Responsibilities:
- Design and synthesize fire retardant and intumescent coatings to support current business and sustainability initiatives including the use of alternative raw materials
- Test physical and chemical characteristics of coatings, resins and other polymers including methods such as thermal analysis, cone calorimeter, small-scale and full-scale protection efficacy testing as well as wet chemical analyses
- Duties will also include interpretation of analysis methods, preparing reports and presentations for both internal and external customers. Work will include scale-up and manufacturing support of coating formulations
- Preparation of specimens for testing the various physical coasting attributes required for in service including long-term exterior exposure studies, accelerated UV and weathering testing, fire performance, substrate adhesion and bond strength
- Assist Technical Service, Sales, and Production with field trials of new products, as well as specific customer projects including resin synthesis, sample preparation testing and other customer service activities
- Participate in global technology and application development through interaction with teams in Australia / New Zealand, North America, and Europe
- Prepare laboratory reports and customer correspondence regarding studies performed
- Adhere to safety standards and maintain a clean and safe work area
- Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and records
- Monitor current literature, trends, and patent activity on coating technology
- Establish a good working knowledge of customer base and products for the Fire Safety business group and company’s adhesive businesses
- Estimated travel at 5% during the first year, could be up to 10% in the future

Job Requirements
Technical Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
- 5 years of related experience in coating formulation, adhesives, or construction chemicals
- Supervisory experience leading a research, development or product improvement team
- Demonstrated talent for developing new and improved products
- Experience in scale-up of polymer synthesis is a plus
- Other applicable industry experience may be considered
- Strong computer skills with experience in Excel, WORD, PowerPoint, Statistical and Modeling software experience preferred
- Background or experience with design of experiment (DOE’s)
- Ability to work safely in company and customer environments. Travel to company manufacturing sites. Fire Safety customer base, Industry events will be an essential component of this role
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels within the company and at customer locations
- Exceptional inter-personal skills with demonstrated success leading cross-functional teams, including internal and external stakeholders
- Highly organized and self-directed. Understands and actively applies project management methodology
