MS/PhD Ziegler/Natta Catalyst Chemist

The position will have responsibility for design, development, and scale-up of new amorphous polyolefin products for use in a variety of applications including, adhesives, sealants, polymers, and additives. The MS/PhD Ziegler-Natta Catalyst Chemist should have significant industrial experience with poylolefin structure-property design and catalysis to understand how to leverage factors such as catalyst selection, monomers, stereochemical control, molecular weight, and other variables to tune material performance. The ideal candidate will have in depth knowledge of polyolefin polymer design and both Ziegler-Natta and single-site catalysts for modified polypropylene polymers, and the application of these materials to the synthesis of polymers at both lab and manufacturing scale. The selected individual for this position will be responsible for leading development programs, designing experiments at the lab and pilot scale to generate developmental materials, and lead characterization and property studies of these materials. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively to broad internal and external audiences, and function in an innovative, fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.  The selected individual for this position will be required to:

  • Have a deep understanding of; polyolefin structure-property design, catalyst chemistry, and application knowledge
  • Apply knowledge of polyolefin chemistry to generate specific amorphous polymer structures
  • Specify catalyst chemistry to generate defined polyolefin structures and properties
  • Understand the effect of catalyst structure and reaction conditions on resultant polyolefin structure
  • Work with suppliers to specify raw materials
  • Work with customers to help understand and apply customer performance requirements to new product developments
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team to design and develop new products based on market needs and manufacturing capability
  • Identify opportunities for improved process conditions at laboratory and manufacturing scale
  • Ability to work with and connect seemingly unrelated pieces of information
  • Translate ideas and concepts into detailed technical work plans that allow a Technician resource to safely and effectively execute an experimental plan
  • Prepare technical presentations and report out progress to the development team and management
  • Effectively run an experimental plan at the laboratory or manufacturing scale and deliver results on schedule
  • Protect intellectual property that is generated.
  • Travel occasionally between company sites and to customers and / or vendors

  • MS/PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience of industrial experience in the polyolefin industry with Ziegler-Natta and single-site catalysts for modified polypropylene polymers
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Previous project leadership in an industrial setting is preferred
  • Knowledge of adhesive applications would be considered a plus
  • Excellent judgment and relational abilities
  • Able to collaborate with peers of various technical backgrounds and fields of expertise to enable effective product development
  • High level of motivation, initiative and sense of urgency
  • Flexible to provide first-hand presence and effective support in multiple labs and facilities
  • Complete fluency in English, including good verbal and written technical communications
