Manager, Chemistry Lab Innovation

The Manager, Chemistry Lab Innovation will have the following responsibilities:

  • Liaison between brand management, design & engineering, other internal disciplines to ensure strategic, priority, execution and cost alignment
  • Work closely with internal development teams to plan and assign appropriate technical resources for projects (internal/external)
  • Work with raw material suppliers to develop an understanding of the materials and their applications for products and use/abuse conditions related to child play patterns
  • Research, identify, qualify and subcontract work with vendors, consultants, inventors for applicable product compound formulations
  • Maintain current trend awareness in field of compounds, plastics, paperboard, wood and arts & craft materials and how they relate to the application of toy products and environmental life cycle assessment
  • Conduct laboratory experimentation to develop new products. Consult with global sourcing and vendors (US, EU, LAM and China) for manufacturing launch
  • Provide technical advice to the plants during new process start-ups and full-scale implementation
  • Manage technical documentation of compound development, toxicological, and regulatory compliance for toys, games, and licensed products
  • Review new regulations (toy, chemical, arts & crafts) and assess their impact on the company product portfolio

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree: Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering (Master preferred)
  • Chemistry / Engineering development background
  • Experience required: 10+ years’ experience in industry, with particular focus on product development support, regulatory knowledge, life cycle assessment and product safety (toy safety preferred); strong understanding of the toy and/or adjacent consumer industry
  • 5+ years in management role
  • Technical writing
  • Understanding of worldwide, local, state and federal product safety standards
  • Understanding of ASTM, ISO, and CEN processes
  • Domestic and International travel ability
  • Subcontracting a variety of services a plus
  • Direct Control: Operating Budget 500K
  • Indirect Control: Impacts revenue 1.5B
  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment
  • Strong leadership and motivational awareness
  • Ability to recognize employee accomplishments and inspire others
  • Strong innovation skills and creative problem solver
  • Good writing, communication, presentation and negotiation skills
