Manager, R&D / QC

The Manager, R&D / QC will have the following responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage the product development process to ensure timely introduction of new and improved products
  • Manage 3 formulation chemists and 2 QC technicians as direct reports
  • Analyze performance data to prove value / benefits of new products
  • Train Chemists in trouble shooting complaints
  • Jointly develop technology strategy with Marketing to determine the proper direction for product line development
  • Develop strong working relationship with technical service to ensure that new products meet customer needs
  • Develop standardized testing methodologies for characterizing company products
  • Coordinate evaluation of new products including meaningful field testing
  • Participate in sourcing raw material, packaging and potential finished goods vendors in the development of new products
  • Develop and justify the necessary capital to build and maintain an effective laboratory
  • Development of technical sales and data sheets with technical services, marketing, and regulatory affairs
  • Create and implement development plans for the technical staff
  • Supervise the measurement of all purchased and manufactured products to specified quality standards
  • Develop and implement objective measurements required to determine product conformance
  • Work closely with manufacturing to improve processes ad to develop in-process QC checks
  • Investigate and resolve conditions that contribute to quality defects

  • Bachelor’s minimum (Masters preferred) in Chemistry (or Chemical Engineering)
  • 5-10 years of experience formulating automotive coatings such as clearcoats, primers, or maybe someone out of color coatings too. Refinish and OEM experience are fine
  • Some supervisory experience
  • Strong communicator, ability to motivate a team, goal-oriented
  • Coatings formulation experience
  • Background in supervising or management
  • Knowledge of the business side of things s this role will deal with vendors and purchasing raw materials
  • Ability to analyze data and lead a team
