Manager or Director of Applications and Innovation

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, production, marketing and regulatory affairs to drive the company’s growth and success in the food industry.  This hands-on position requires a desire and ability to work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as the demonstration of a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiatives applied to the various duties and aspects of the position.  This person will be expected to play an integral part of the company’s team located in Augusta, GA.


  • Strategic Leadership
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive food science strategy aligned with the company’s overall goals and objectives
    • Identify emerging trends and opportunities in the food industry and assess their potential impact on the organization’s products and services
  • Product Development and Innovation
    • Lead and direct research and development efforts to create new food products that meet consumer demands and adhere to regulatory requirements
    • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in the food development process
  • Quality Assurance and Food Safety
    • Ensure compliance with all food safety regulations, certifications, and quality standards to maintain the highest level of product and consumer trust
    • Implement and maintain robust quality assurance and control systems throughout the production process
  • Research and Testing
    • Oversee research activities to improve product formulations, nutritional content, taste, and shelf life of food products
    • Collaborate with external partners and research institutions to stay updated on industry advancements and breakthroughs
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Work closely with other departments, such as marketing, supply chain, and production, to align food science initiative with overall business strategies
    • Provide technical expertise and support to other teams, guiding them in product-related decisions
  • Regulatory Compliance
    • Stay current with food industry regulations and ensure the company’s adherence to relevant laws and guidelines
    • Work closely with regulatory affairs teams to ensure product labeling and claims are accurate and compliant
  • Budget and Resource Management
    • Manage the food science department’s budget and allocate resources effectively to achieve objectives

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • BS in Food Science, Food Technology, or related field. Advanced degrees are preferred
  • Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in food science, research, and development, with a proven track record of successful product innovation
  • Strong knowledge of food safety regulations, quality standards, and industry best practices
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to lead and inspire cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues, stakeholders, and external partners
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities to address complex challenges in the food industry
  • Must comply with company’s core values for the safe and efficient operation of the business and maintain sound relationships among and with employees

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in food formulation laboratory
  • Innovative mindset and a positive outlook towards finding solutions
  • Interest and general knowledge of the food and beverage marketplace and ingredient marketplace
  • Working knowledge of natural sweeteners and flavors ideal
  • Understanding of basic sensory test methodology and application to product development
