Material Scientist – Thermoplastics
Global manufacturer is seeking a Material Scientist. Your work here will include evaluating materials, developing test methods and leading applications development. Company is focused on innovation of new technologies for increased sustainability. PhD is required for this opportunity.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct scientific research, develop, and evaluate innovative materials / compounds with a multi-dimensional approach covering the different formulations-structures-properties-processes-products
- Through scientific research and experimental characterization evaluate antidegradant performance in rubber compounds and improve understanding of physico-chemical mechanisms and structure-property relationships
- Apply fundamentals of fracture mechanics and viscoelasticity to deepen the understanding of rubber endurance performance including ozone/mechanical cracking, crack initiation / crack growth. Identify the key influencing parameters and provide them as inputs / directions for the design of new products
- Support application development efforts through effective laboratory test development, product characterization and experimentation
- Conduct rubber compounding and other technical experiments and projects
- Lead and participate in technical teams
- Work in a fast paced, results-oriented team environment to assist in developing new technologies related to tire industry market
- Work with internal and external customers in answering technical questions
- Ability to document experimental work, including writing standard test methods and technical reports
- Work safely and promote a safe work environment

Job Requirements
Technical Qualifications:
- PhD in Polymer materials, material science, material engineering or equivalent required
- Experience/Knowledge in polymer material science or rubber / rubber for tires
- A problem-solving attitude, broad intellectual curiosity, and an ability to learn / combine knowledge from different disciplines to develop understanding of product / application performance
- Demonstrated broad working knowledge in a wide range of polymer materials / science skills including structure property relationships, polymer processing, viscoelasticity, characterization, and polymer testing. Experience in rubber formulations (Tire Industry), processing (mixing, milling, and calendaring) and fatigue is a plus
- Experience in the development of processing-structure-property relationships through systematic experimental design
- 3+ years’ experience
- Polymer or Tire Industry experience is a plus
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Independent and driven with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously within a multi-site cross-functional team
