Polymer Synthesis Chemist

A Scientist in the Polymer Innovation Team contributes to the assessment, development, reformulation, quality, maintenance, and enhancement of polymer intermediates through planning, executing, and analysis of experiments with clear and accurate results.  This includes adherence to sound performance, quality and economic goals/requirements.  Knowledge of existing and novel polymer technologies will be utilized to develop differentiated products that exceed consumer expectations.  The individual is accountable for the solution of complex technical problems (product/process) using knowledge of raw materials, contemporary polymer synthesis, manufacturing methods, substrates, instruments, coatings application equipment and customer processes.  This role is responsible for timely and accurate completion of multiple projects of moderate to high level complexity while also serving as a mentor to less experienced chemists.  This position requires expert level knowledge and experience in related polymer technologies / markets.  Core responsibilities and tasks to include:

  • Ability to perform laboratory work in a safe manner and follow established laboratory safety / housekeeping procedures and processes
  • Synthesize novel polymers in support and of strategic business objectives. Insure proper IP protection of novel materials through the timely filing of ROIs and patent applications
  • Maintain leadership for key Technology Platform projects; carry out necessary laboratory lab work to meet project objectives and timelines as outlined by the company’s Project Management process
  • Effectively interact and communicate with internal project development teams and insure alignment between Polymer and Product Development groups
  • Effectively participate in the scale up and commercialization of new products
  • Manage multiple projects and efficiently utilize both internal and external resources
  • Act as a resource for the technical department in helping to solve key technical problems
  • Prepare and communicate technical presentations / reports to senior technical management on a regular basis (i.e. monthly)
  • Train Associate level Chemists and Engineers on polymerization techniques and processes

  • Doctoral Degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Coatings Technology or related field
  • Must have previous work experience in a lab
  • Must be able to travel
  • Must have a Master’s Degree from an accredited institution
  • At least 10 years of experience in the design, synthesis and scaling of polymers for coatings or materials applications
  • Experience with both solvent and water borne polymer synthesis
  • Understanding of the major base coating chemistries (epoxy, acrylic, latex, polyurethane, polyester, oleo, etc.)
  • Demonstrated success in the commercialization of at least 2-3 novel polymer platforms
  • Proven IP track record of patented technologies
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead polymer development projects from inception to scale up to commercialization
  • Ability to be self-directed and work effectively and collaboratively in Project Team environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
