Principal Scientist – Films

Your expertise in developing products from concept to commercialization is needed here.  Work with Junior staff, mentor and guide them in the NPD process, work directly with customers to develop and deliver novel solutions in this growing Global company.

Join a fast-growing company as an individual achiever, as a part of their high performing team, with the responsibility for independently leading wide range of innovation programs such as film formulation and application development to customer translations and cost saving projects.  This role offers ample opportunity to leverage fundamental polymer science and engineering skills, as a principal technical investigator responsible for exploring and developing new chemistries, materials and processes to meet core customer needs and expand to adjacent segments.  In addition, this role will drive the projects using the company Innovation Process (a stage gate process).

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the research, development, and design of engineering projects to complete on time and within budgets
  • Conduct technology benchmarking and generate strategy to provide technical leadership to ensure company’s market leading position in the changing market and regulatory environment
  • Guide and mentor the team within their discipline to deliver products from bench to production
  • Lead the design and development of novel methods, materials, and processes in accordance with business plans
  • Maintain an awareness of “state of the art” technology as it applies to our industry
  • Interact with customers to gain insights on product application, processing, and performance requirements
  • Work with cross-functional teams to resolve existing product and raw material / component issues (Procurement, Finance, Engineering, and Production)
  • Utilize advanced data interpretation methods to evaluate existing and new materials, products, and processes to meet internal and external customer requirements; translate product needs to experimental data or design parameters
  • Confer with R&D members from cross functional organizations (operations, sales, and marketing team) on delivering projects, interpreting test results, or developing nonstandard tests
  • Work with external vendors as necessary in support of new technology and new analytical technique development for new products and processes
  • Oversee technical papers and invention reports and guide standards and specifications for processes, facilities, products, or tests
  • Requires a flexible work style and travel as necessary to perform assignments

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in polymer chemistry with 20+ years research and development industrial experience in polymer / material science and engineering
  • Expert understanding of structure-property relationship in polymer / material designs
  • High level of creativity and productivity with strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong ability to handle frequently changing job functions, and rapidly learn new techniques and approaches while balancing time effectively between multiple projects
  • Provide leadership, training, and mentorship to less experienced team members
  • Demonstrated the organizational skills to manage and prioritize multiple tasks / projects
  • Proven leadership capability in cross-functional team setting, as a project leader for both product research and development projects
  • Record of driving projects through to successful transition of concepts to production
  • Experience in partnering closely with product delivery team
  • Strong skills in gathering, documenting, and analyzing competitive information from sources such as patents and meetings and using this information to guide program and intellectual property strategy
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including ability to present the rationale, data, issues, and accomplishments of the team
