Principal Scientist

Principal Scientist role available with an established and leading manufacturer.  Opportunity to lead both customer-driven and long-term research projects on a very collaborative team.  Competitive salary, benefits, and relocation assistance available.

The Principal Scientist responsibilities will include identification and application of new/improved technologies and processes to be used for the current and next generation of roofing products.  The Principal Scientist should be familiar with composite materials, which include, but not limited to asphalt, fiber glass, non-woven polymer fabric, and polymeric materials.  The Principal Scientist will work in a cross functional environment; plan, lead and execute research and development activities; provide timely and accurate testing, data collection and analysis.  The position reports directly to the Technical Director – Research and Technology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop plans for projects or studies as assigned to outline research procedures to be followed
  • Plan experimentation according to variety of methods to be used, and availability of resources
  • Conduct research utilizing institution library, archives, and collections, and other sources of information to collect, record, analyze, and evaluate facts
  • Perform experiments to confirm causation and develop follow-on pathways for the business as appropriate
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in analytical and physical testing equipment and processes; develop physical and analytical methods for raw material, intermediate and finished product evaluations
  • Collect, analyze, and synthesize diverse information. Uses intuition and experience to complement data.  Conduct areas of both pure and applied research to improve understanding and performance of all raw materials and finished goods
  • Discuss findings with team to evaluate validity and prepare reports of completed projects for documentation, for presentation to agency requesting project, or for use in further applied or theoretical research activities. Document and update as needed in the form of a logbook, discussions, planning and execution on the shared documentation platform
  • Interact with industry organizations
  • Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully; think outside the box and provide alternative solutions; work well in group problem solving situations
  • Lead 3 to 5 projects simultaneously; develop and execute the project plans; work in a cross functional environment
  • Provide technical assistance with product and process improvements and general problem solving. Interface with internal and external customers, suppliers, manufacturers, and outside laboratories
  • Gain expertise in raw materials, finished products, and become familiar with manufacturing processes

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • A PhD or Masters in material science and engineering, polymer science, polymer chemistry, chemical engineering or closely related field is preferred for this position
  • Able to travel up to 15% of the time
  • Be able to outline methodically the breadth and depth of any complex problem
  • Write clearly and informatively. Present numerical data effectively.  Generate technical assessments and quality assurance reports
  • Enthusiasm for hands-on work, as well as the ability to eventually coach and mentor others
  • Creative approach to R&D, products, techniques, new material search, processes, etc.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Minitab, mainframe applications, and other software applications
