Principal Scientist

Principal Scientist uses his/her knowledge and experience to pursue product development and R&D goals, supporting the new product and tolling pipeline including synthesis, application / material characterization for these products.

Important qualifications include a commitment to scientific excellence, the ability to design and execute experiments that enable decision making; troubleshooting and solving technical and logistical problems.  Principal Scientist will be engaged with process simulations or Design of Experiments approaches, bench top, kilo scale, pilot scale, and kilo-ton scale operators.  The successful candidate is expected to network with lead scientists at the other company R&D centers.  This person must be able to independently manage technical and strategic projects and work productively with junior and senior colleagues.  The candidate will be part of the Global company R&D Team. 

The Principal Scientist will perform a wide variety of duties essential to the manufacture of chemical products while consistently adhering to all established safety and operating procedures.  This includes but is not limited to:

  • Responsible for new product development from bench scale to plant scale-up, developing creative solutions to overcome synthetic and manufacturing obstacles
  • Generate lab scale samples of new products for application work and customer evaluation
  • Work with the Pilot Plant and Plant staff during all stages of new product development
  • Interact with Tech Service, Sales, and Customers to solve customer issues and develop new formulations using company made products
  • Provide technical support to Operations and Quality Control on as needed basis
  • Demonstrates information capture by lab Notebooks, electronic data and authors technical reports and regular project updates
  • Keeps abreast of technical development in appropriate fields via literature review, patent analysis, etc.
  • Direct and supervise Lab Technicians in support of functions as assigned

Requirements:

  • Master’s in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry or Material Science required. Doctoral Degree preferred
  • 7-15 years of relevant industrial chemistry experience (polymer, organic, materials preferred)
  • Research and Development experience in polyurethanes and in alkoxylation is preferred
  • Good organizational skills, verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Solid problem-solving skills
  • Good understanding of intellectual property matters, regulatory laws and literature search
  • Demonstrated ability to master specific product / process and equipment knowledge
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective support to customers and their applications. Occasional support to operations and quality
  • Proven track record of product / process development and scale-up, and demonstrated knowledge of laboratory equipment
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Statistical software like mini-Tab, and DOE methodology
