Process R&D Engineer

The Process R&D Engineer position reports into the Process Improvement Manager- LPNA PD and is responsible for leading multiple and complex commercialization projects, that will improve our product quality/reliability, profitability, plant efficiency and facilitate innovation-technology advancements.  This position will work closely with the culinary, product development team, and manufacturing partners to develop, test, and implement sound processes to commercialize multiple product formats. As the process expert, this role will need to continually improve the LPNA scale up process from kitchen to production; lead the design and development of experimental plans; drive the development of strategic recommendations to advance our commercialization capabilities and best practices; collaborate with internal and external teams; influence and drive commercialization excellence in the product development, business development, innovation processes; lead, manage, and develop PD teammates on process acumen.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Define, measure, analyze, improve, and control performance on key commercialization metrics that will improve our consistency, repeatability, and best practices.
  • Perform feasibility studies, situation assessments, and root cause analyses to repair and prevent quality issues. Develop innovative approaches for testing and problem resolution.
  • Guide and lead the data and documentation of test results & conclusions, process parameters, critical control points and specifications. Lead the analysis and interrogation of data to ensure that manufacturing systems will reliably deliver high quality product within specification and cost.
  • Determine appropriate design guardrails and footprints for product lines. Commission, validate, and startup of new products, processes, and equipment.
  • Integrate process expertise & knowledge into early product development process. Build cohesive relationship as liaison between Product Development, Quality, Plant Operations and Supply Chain during the commercialization process.  Provide process engineering, QA/QC, and ingredient knowledge to implement efficient and effective transfer between R&D and the plants.
  • Drive the development of innovative processes/technologies and commercialization of new business initiatives.
  • Identify ways to improve profitability across the business by optimizing processes and finding ingredient synergies/savings.
  • Manages, trains, and develops PD team and key stakeholders on technical competencies and best practices.  
  • Provide technical leadership in customer facing meetings, presentations, and sales trainings.

  • BA required: Chemical, Mechanical, Food Engineering, or Food Science preferred.  Master’s preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years in CPG or Foodservice industry related experience leading commercialization, quality, engineering, and/or product development process required
  • Must be available to travel to various customers, suppliers, and production facilities (20-30%)
  • Cross functional leadership required on multiple projects, timelines, and programs with a high level of complexity, speed, and autonomy
  • Demonstrate innovative mindset, thought leadership, business strategy & creative problem solving. Lead awareness of industry developments and pursue ingredient, product or technology advances for application to new and innovative product initiatives with our products and processes
  • Strong understanding of competitive landscape and ability to identify opportunities and bring action to improve LPNA capabilities, differentiation, competitive advantages, and selling story
  • Partners with external suppliers and manufacturing to bring in solutions and technologies that will drive LPNA strategic initiatives
