Quality Control Manager

To ensure the quality control systems and laboratory are maintained and managed to provide quality control data to meet customer needs, operational needs and regulatory compliance.  Use technical expertise, knowledge of the corn wet milling business, and an understanding of company goals to work with Operations, Quality Assurance and customers to assure product quality.

This person will have extensive management requirements of the QC Lab in job duties and functions, leading this team at their flagship location.  It is a large facility that sits on 66 acres with multiple buildings and 400 employees.  Oversee direct reports in the lab that manages ensuring testing of starch products is timely using exacting methods that provide excellent customer service for critical data information to company’s clientele.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct reports: 2-3 in supervisor position and/or lead + 11 indirect reports
  • Experience working in a food plant environment including compliance with applicable regulations governing the various product lines, a plus
  • Detailed understanding of HPLC instrumentation and troubleshooting
  • Excellent organizational skills. Knowledge of the industry, products and customer needs to recommend improved testing methods, instrumentation, and anticipate the testing needs of customers
  • Must demonstrate exceptional leadership and management skills in working with people and managing projects
  • Ability to evaluate personnel needs/effectiveness and coach and implement effective development activities for staff
  • Ability to challenge traditional methods of accomplishing tasks or work activities; ability to identify and implement creative, innovative solutions, when appropriate. Familiar with Lean Six Sigma tools
  • Assessing the current demands on laboratory services; prioritizing testing based on business needs and departmental goals. Working with Analysts and Operations to schedule weekly laboratory support
  • Sustaining 5S2 by assuring performance of weekly audits and follow ups on corrections
  • Revising and developing laboratory SOPs to stay current with scientific developments, customer, and business needs
  • Developing and implementing training on new technology and equipment to expand the skill sets of Analysts

Requirements:

  • BS Food Science, Biology, Chemistry
  • 7-10 years’ industry experience with 4+ in a supervisory role
  • Process and Quality Control for Wet/Dry Mix background
  • 7-10 years in Quality Control in a food manufacturing, milling environment or ingredient environment
  • Leadership of a quality team for food testing
  • GLP – Good lab practices and GMP’s
  • Analytical experience knowledge using lab instruments like chromatography and determination of physical properties – viscosity, moisture content, particle size, temperature
  • Use of titrimetric methods for levels of species in raw materials and finished goods
  • Quantitative determination of toxins in raw and finished goods
  • Lean Six Sigma certified of any kind a plus
  • Hands on in a lab environment at a plant facility while balancing quality initiatives while guiding and training junior quality technicians
