R&D Chemist – Pigment Dispersions

The purpose of this position is to conduct laboratory testing, product formulation and process development for research and development of new products and existing products.  This position will also support to sales for inquiries from new or existing customers and supports manufacturing problem solving and process improvement.

JOB SUMMARY:  Under limited supervision from the department supervisor, formulate dispersions to required specifications and technical targets.  Plan and organize all stages of development and scale-up from the laboratory through production.  Follow safety rules and maintain work area and equipment in clean and orderly condition.  Perform special projects, as assigned.  Meet with customers and travel to customer and supplier sites as needed.

Essential Duties & Skills:

  • Conducts lab experiments for new and existing pigment dispersions for product development, product optimization, problem solving and basic understanding
  • Formulates new pigment dispersion products and processes
  • Formulates improvements for existing dispersion products
  • Ability to organize efficient, self-directed, work plans for multiple projects
  • Has good and professional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Understand color measurement instrumentation and color theory
  • Understands and utilizes Six Sigma methodologies when possible
  • Follows company safety and operating policies and procedures
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in teams
  • Advanced user of Microsoft Office tools
  • Conducts self with honestly and integrity

  • BS degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
  • Training and Experience: Ability to quickly learn and understand new procedures and processes.  Job experience working in manufacturing
  • Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory operating procedures, materials, and equipment for pigment dispersions.  Knowledge of pigment chemistries, categories, and major pigment suppliers.  Ability to accurately measure, prepare and dispense chemical reagents and solutions, calibrate and operate diagnostic instruments, and perform routine laboratory tests and suggest problem solutions
  • Communication and Math: Ability to read, write and speak the English language.  Ability to perform college level mathematics
  • Preferred Additional Skills: Experience in formulating pigment dispersions or coatings products.  Experience in coatings manufacturing or quality
