R&D Manager

This innovative, growing company is looking for their right-hand person to the Director of R&D.  Ideally you will have 7+ years’ experience in protein, bakery, clean label, low carb, and/or plant protein along with experience in reformulation, pilot trials and commercialization.  Experience with team leadership is required.

Essential Job Functions:

Working with guidance and support from the Sr. Director of R&D, but with expected autonomy you will:

  • Provide technical leadership to develop new products & product categories from bench to pilot scale up, and through full commercialization
  • Work cross-functionally to support continuous improvement and optimization initiatives of current products and manufacturing lines
  • Develop testing methods and data analysis tools to help build in-depth understanding of products, ingredients, processing conditions and equipment used in operation
  • Support creation of new processes and procedures as the company grows
  • Provide guidance and training to laboratory technicians, new food scientists and other co-workers on experimental design, testing protocols, operation of equipment / instruments, and other as needed
  • Think critically, balance multiple tasks, and be flexible wearing whatever “hat” is needed to support cross-functionally teams and help meet company goals
  • Contribute to our knowledge base, thought leadership, and company culture through your unique character and skills

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science or Chemical / Biological Systems Engineering required. Master’s Degree preferred
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in food manufacturing, food product development, laboratory and/or pilot plant settings
  • Experience in any of the following strongly preferred:
    • Food safety – background in natural antimicrobials or HACCP/PCQI certifications are a strong plus
    • Food engineering & continuous improvement
    • Food packaging – background in flexible or modified atmosphere packaging are a strong plus
    • Food product development – background in bakery, high protein / low carb or clean label foods are a strong plus
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Highly collaborative with the ability to lead through influence
  • Self-starter and intellectually curious. Comfortable with ambiguity
  • Experience working in small and large companies preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
