R&D Paint and Coatings Scientist (Experienced ONLY)

The R&D Paint and Coatings Scientist will have the following responsibilities:

  • With Marketing, identify and validate potential new product opportunities focused within the broad arena of Paints & Coatings. Define and demonstrate compelling value propositions for existing and new products
  • Work in conjunction with the Customer Application Centers to ensure global dissemination of new technologies and trends, and facilitate the dissemination of regional learning to all CAC’s.
  • Initiate new R&D projects and lead their successful progression through the stage gate process
  • Implement state of the art tools for Paint & Coatings data analysis and mining
  • Design new chemical entities to fulfill a variety of needs in the Paints & Coatings arena
  • Perform non-routine organic synthesis, including nitroalkane handling and transformations, high pressure hydrogenation reactions, and vacuum fractional distillations
  • Synthesis and characterization of a wide range of materials, typically small molecules, including intermediates and products from Paints & Coatings
  • Activities will involve a variety of chemistries, including Henry, Michael, Mannich reactions, high pressure slurry hydrogenations, distillations, and crystallizations. A working knowledge of GC, HPLC, FTIR, GC/MS, NMR, DSC, TGA, etc. is required
  • Manage project work flow through the laboratory, including project oversight for one or more Technologists
  • Coordinate the flow of work to other laboratories, including the CAC’s and external contract laboratories as needed
  • Create presentations and review completed work, key results and business implications with colleagues and management
  • Present results externally at industry / functional conferences, as appropriate
  • Maintain current awareness of the chemical literature, including the Paints & Coatings trade association publications
  • Document all work in a timely organized manner, and obtain patents on intellectual property as it is developed

  • MS or PhD (preference) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Material Science
  • Minimum 5 years of bench / synthesis experience in an industrial setting
  • Ability to learn new chemistries and application requirements quickly
  • Broad experience across multiple coatings markets and technologies
  • Highly self-motivated, with a results oriented mentality
  • Excellent synthetic organic chemistry skills
  • Strong cross functional team player with demonstrated successes in new product development activities
  • Strong, demonstrated history of invention
  • Strong knowledge of structure-property relationships in small organic molecules
  • Strong knowledge of paint formulating
  • Experience mentoring / coaching / directing a small team of lab workers, including project delegation, prioritization, etc.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills: lab notebook, research reports, invention disclosures, management and external presentations all required
  • Current ability to work legally in the United States on a permanent basis
