Resin Synthesis Chemist (Chemist II)

The Chemist II is responsible for leading activities related to polymer research and new product development within the Performance Coatings Group.  The incumbent will have opportunities to demonstrate leadership while providing support to polymer manufacturing, performing independent projects, and supervise technicians on a day-to-day basis.  Core responsibilities and tasks to include:

  • Perform polymer synthesis, tests and development of new or updated formulas that require an advanced understanding of chemistry, product lines, and materials; assists with determining quality standards
  • Assists with developing and adjusting product formulas and coding, develops test batches and applies a basic understanding of application principles and practices; assists with the development and scale up of production formulas
  • Assists with analyzing, evaluating, and selecting materials for tests and production batches
  • Serves as a team member for projects that are complex in nature and are generally sub-sets of larger objectives and provides professional support to the product development, quality control, manufacturing processes, and other operations
  • Interprets and applies department policies and procedures and applicable laws, rules, and regulations; ensures compliance with these areas
  • Responds to complex questions and concerns from plants, research technicians, quality control, customers and other internal and external parties regarding development and related programs and services
  • Adhere to company safety guidelines at all times
  • Mentor other individuals in the laboratory

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or a related discipline AND two semesters of general and organic Chemistry each, MS or PhD preferred

REQUIRED:

  • 3 years of resins and coatings specific industry experience
  • 5-7 years of lab experience, experience within the resin, paint and/or coatings industry is preferred

PREFERRED:

  • 5-7 years of resins and coatings specific industry experience
  • Understanding of waterbased coating formulation (interior and exterior)
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS)
  • Design of Experiment
  • Organizational skills
  • Communication skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Able to adapt and change quickly in response to new situations / demands
  • Ability to tailor communication to fit the needs of the audience
