Senior Research Scientist

This position is for a Sr. Scientist in the Coating, Inks, and Adhesives Research Group within the Organic and Biomedical Technologies research directorate.  The group conducts research in the areas of coatings, inks, and adhesives to deliver technical solutions and innovations to all company businesses.  This person will work on cross-functional project teams and will be expected to set the technical direction and lead the research effort for their part of their assigned project(s).  Expertise and experience in the areas of coating, ink, and/or adhesive formulation chemistry and application processes is required.  This person may also be called upon to lead a project and technical team.  This position also requires the ability to adapt to changes in priorities as projects evolve.  Writing technical reports, presenting experimental work to technical teams and leadership, and contributing to intellectual property is also an expectation of this role.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Carry out all work out in a safe manner and use required PPE
  • Direct and carry out research in the areas of coatings, inks, and/or adhesives science to advance progress on assigned projects
  • Identify and define key problems and develop and execute approaches to solve them
  • The candidate is expected to take a hands-on approach and spend significant time in the lab
  • Deliver practical solutions along with fundamental understanding through deep technical knowledge and rigorous experimentation
  • Documentation and presentation of work in both written and oral formats will be required
  • Documentation of ideas and contributions to intellectual property is expected
  • Provide guidance to technicians in the group working on the project and assume formal supervisory responsibility as deemed necessary
  • Travel requirements: Expected to be minimal but will depend on project needs.  Some international travel may be required

Requirements:

  • PhD in Organic or Polymer Chemistry with 2 to 5 years industrial experience or M.S. in Organic or Polymer Chemistry with 5 to 10 years of industrial experience. May look at B.S. with many years of experience if they understand how coatings chemistry is linked to performance and can problem solve
  • Coatings formulation or applications experience preferred, and coatings for glass applications experience is preferred
  • Polyurethane, UV curable, and epoxy experience would all be applicable
  • The ideal candidate will have a track record of applying their subject matter expertise to solve problems and deliver solutions as it pertains to the use of coatings, inks, and/or adhesives with glass
  • Demonstrated ability to solve difficult technical problems and deliver practical solutions that meet the application requirements along with the fundamental understanding of the chemistry that drives the performance
  • Proficient in polymer structure property relationships
  • Project leadership experience
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Attention to details
  • Self-starter and technically curious
  • Must want to be in the lab!
