The Senior Safety Specialist

The Senior Safety Specialist will be tasked and responsible for developing, planning and implementing safety compliance programs to control risks, prevent losses and protect company personnel and assets.  S/he promotes and fosters a safety culture.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for providing professional expertise and guidance to management and employees in all areas of Safety Compliance
  • Lead the development of safety plans, programs, and procedures to foster and promote a culture of safety, accountability, and compliance
    • Create and revise plant safety policies, standards, rules and procedures as require
  • Develop company-wide safety goals; ensure safety goals are achieved and/or exceeded
  • Develops and implements safety policies, procedures and programs and ensures they are in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules and regulations
  • Designs and directs programs to reduce accidents, occupational illness and exposure to health hazards
  • Identify safety and health hazards associated with business activities. Establish guidelines for protections of those hazards
    • Inspect facilities, work environments, machinery, and equipment to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determine corrective or preventative measures where needed and follow-up to ensure measures have been implemented in conformance with company policy and governmental standards.
    • Reviews all manufacturing and support operations to ensure ongoing safety. Develops job safety analyses and safe operating procedures for all tasks and in investigating incidents.  Develop and implement audit program to review and ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Manages/oversees training programs for employees on relevant accident prevention and compliance programs such as Lockout/Tagout, confined space, entry,PPE, fire prevention ad protection, chemical handling, hazard communication, etc.
    • Maintain safety, safety training and facility files and records as required per company policy and regulatory agencies
  • Performs analyses of accident causes and associated health hazards in an effort to target specific prevention strategies.
  • Prepares and submits recommendations to Senior Management, for action plans to minimize company exposure to costs associated with Worker’s Compensation
  • Develops and maintains internal communication program and process to ensure both management’s and organization’s awareness of compliance issues and activities are communicated
  • Conducts worksite assessments to identify and evaluate safety and health risks, compliance exposures and management systems deficiencies. Develop strategies to reduce or eliminate these risks and exposures
  • Participates in all federal, state and corporate investigations and Safety inspections. Assist in the preparation of material and evidence for use in investigations
  • Stay abreast on OSHA, safety and environmental laws to keep company in compliance with regulatory agencies and other applicable laws
  • Maintain professional competency through participation in professional education and training programs and completion of any necessary requirements to maintain professional credentials
  • On occasion may be required to work evening and/or on the weekend

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Safety Engineering or related field
  • Must have Certified Safety Professional or similar certification
  • Must have experience in New Jersey TCPA or OSHA PSM
  • Minimum 5-8 years’ directly related experience
  • Minimum of 3 years in a manufacturing environment working with hazardous chemicals
  • Demonstrated ability in leading and facilitating the development and implementation of a safety program
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, procedures and practical application governing Safety in the workplace
  • Certified Hygienist would be a plus
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Strong time management, project management and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to achieve results through team efforts
  • Ability to persuade, market and sell new ideas
  • Ability to interface and communicate/collaborate at all levels internally and externally
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills – ability to communicate a clear vision to promote and foster a culture of safety
