Senior Scientist

The major responsibility of a Senior Synthesis Scientist will be the creation of a new acrylic polymer synthesis platform within company.  The acrylic formulation and synthesis process will be pioneered within company with the assistance of an R&D Process Engineer, growing this platform from the pilot stage through the production stage.  The acrylic formulations for this platform will be designed by the Senior Synthesis Scientist, working from the pilot stage through the production stage.  The new acrylic platform will require that the Senior Synthesis Scientist design, polymerize, and formulate acrylic polymers for targeted markets and product lines

The Senior Synthesis Scientist will be part of a team that includes a Synthesis Chemist and Technician.  Once the Senior Synthesis Scientist has grown the new platform to a level that justifies the addition of new resources, they will be given additional assistance which could include chemists, specialists, technicians, and/or technical co-ops.  The Senior Synthesis Scientist will be expected to provide innovative solutions for project related problems.

Finally, the Senior Synthesis Scientist is charged with the responsibility of helping to build a “World Class” attitude in the department, a belief that R&D is vital to sustaining and nurturing the company’s business.

Other duties:

  • Design, develop and deliver new acrylic platform technologies for targeted markets
  • Ensure that technical and functional design goals meet business requirements and timelines
  • Enhance understanding of acrylic polymers and customer technologies to deliver specialized products for unmet needs
  • Develop and sustain a high-quality polymer product design and synthesis laboratory
  • Provide internal specifications to address TOSCA and OSHA rules that apply to the new lab
  • Create prototypes and work with sales to solicit customer feedback
  • Provide initial technical service for new products

Requirements:

  • MS or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer or Material Science
  • 10+ years of experience in synthesis, acrylic formulations and polymer construction from discovery to scale up through production coated product
  • Deep understanding of polymer chemistry and structure-property relationships
  • Experience in Design of Experiments and statistical process control
  • Broad knowledge and hands on experience in a variety of characterization techniques, including HPLC, GPC, FT-IR, DSC, TGA, UV-Vis, GC-FID, GC-MS, and viscometry
  • Documented history of innovation and invention
  • Working familiarity of intellectual property search, attainment and avoidance on an international scale
  • Good leadership skills – this person will direct one chemist and one technician
  • Innovative, organized self-starter with good problem-solving skills
  • Collaborative interpersonal style with experience in leading project teams
  • Excellent communication skills
