Sensory Scientist

The Sensory Scientist will focus on supporting Research and Development both within the department and with the department customers as well as growing and expanding the sensory department.  The primary objective is to give complete sensory guidance for new product development and current product optimization projects.  This will be mainly done by utilizing both descriptive analysis and consumer testing.

Key responsibilities include:  managing and training descriptive panel, utilizing difference testing, running consumer testing with an outside facility, working with the R&D, Brand teams or executive leadership to design the most valuable sensory studies, which will be used to iterate prototype or optimize profiles, develop new Sensory methods based on the needs of the company, analyze and report Sensory learnings according to department standards.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Listen and identify project objective and influence research plan. Communicate complex technical information to a non-technical audience
  • Analyze sensory results with accurate statistical methods and interpret sensory results
  • Manage Descriptive panel programs by developing highly trained panels, create and manage tests, and analyze and report on findings
  • This includes working with the R&D project teams to guide iterations and build market winning products
  • Execute well organized consumer testing from start to finish. This includes identifying best methods to answer research questions, working with CLT sites, designing and building the tests, organizing and working with teams to execute as well as analyzing and reporting
  • Most essential is to give fast and accurate guidance to R&D project leaders so as to increase the success rate of new product launches, quality of the products, and/or productivity initiatives
  • Coordinate all Sensory Transitions of new products, including creating profiles and a training program to improve transition to the Breweries

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Providing technical direction and mentoring to and/or supervising other scientific professionals on staff
  • Making presentations on sensory evaluation to professional organizations and/or continuing education programs / seminars
  • Staying current with literature and information about sensory evaluation
  • Provide feedback to all Sensory Associates on panel leadership and panel training

Requirements:

  • MS Degree in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, Psychology or another related field with minimum 2 years of Sensory Science project work experience
  • Brewing or alcohol industry a plus
  • In-depth knowledge of technical tools that support sensory testing (automated data collection systems, statistical software, like FIZZ or Compusense)
  • Experienced in panel training
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis (xlstat a plus)
  • Experience coaching and mentoring others
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven success multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
  • High degree of ownership and professional commitment
  • Travel up to 10% of the time
