Solvent Based Wood Coatings Chemist

The Solvent Based Wood Coatings Chemist will have the following responsibilities:

  • Plans and leads multiple technical development projects and the commercialization process based on project objectives and timelines; projects are typically moderate to difficult in scale and complexity. Communicate results and conclusions to Technical, Business and Operations groups as necessary
  • Applies an expert understanding of company’s solvent-based technology, industry, and competitor technologies, application methods, products, and manufacturing processes regarding the research and development of solvent based wood coasting formulations
  • Reads and interprets patents and regulations, examines new product concepts and technology, and determines how to improve or utilize technologies. Utilizes and promotes the use of design tools including DOE and DfLSS methodologies.  Data analysis background a plus
  • Interprets and applies department policies and procedures to ensure compliance with principles, practices, applicable laws, rules, and regulations; work safely and maintain a neat laboratory area
  • Serves as a team member for moderate-difficult projects to provide technical management and direction to product development, quality control, manufacturing processes, and other operations; may lead sub-sets of smaller projects
  • 10% travel

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Polymers and Coatings. Broad chemistry and polymer knowledge
  • 5 years of industrial chemistry experience, preferably experience within the paint and/or coatings industry developing solvent based products for the wood industry
  • Utilizes technical project management concepts
  • Wide breath of technology and raw material experience with primary focus in solvent based coatings for the kitchen cabinet, furniture and distribution markets
  • Proven understanding and use of chemistry to trouble shoot and develop coating solutions
  • Commercialization success over multiple technology areas. Customer specialist, primary technical contact.  Basic in solvent based coatings experience.  Applied commercialization principles and practices
  • Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); and other applicable applications such as Statistical design software (Minitab)
  • Proficient in coating applications knowledge and technique over a wide range of technology and equipment. Successful line design with equipment vendors and customer
  • Strong in solving technical problems and recommending solutions. Data analysis / LSS / DfLSS proficiency a plus
  • Good communication skills – this person will have to interact with manufacturing personnel, executive team members, and customers. This person will need to be able to relate with all of them.  Collaboration is a big part of their culture.  Ability to develop and present detailed complex presentations to upper management and customers
