Sr. Development Chemist

The Sr. Development Chemist will have the following responsibilities:

DUTIES:  Provides experienced technical support for Production, Customer Service, Marketing, and Sales.  This person has a primary responsibility to lead the development of new products and formulations, and to support efforts to continually improve existing products.  In addition, is involved in providing experienced troubleshooting and Quality Control services for Production.  Job functions include project management, new product formulation, laboratory measurements (wet and instrumental), and data entry and analysis.  He/she is responsible for providing a safe and clean work environment and for maintaining accurate and timely records.

  1. New Product Development
  • Prepare and develop new laboratory formulations with little or no supervision
  • Conduct stability and applications testing on formulations
  • Recommend alternate raw materials or procedures for formulating new products
  • Provide test results for internal and competitive products


  1. Production Support
  • Lead laboratory efforts to aid in the solution of problems during batch manufacture
  • Aid in the assessment and handling of non-conforming products
  • Blending products in the laboratory to aid in the development of specifications and procedures
  • Maintain and analyze retains of new formulations
  • Maintain pH meter and other instrumentation in the plant as specified


  1. Quality Control
  • Team with production personnel to assure the quality of company products
  • Provide information from laboratory work that will allow the writing of blend instructions
  • Establish control parameters for products (pH, viscosity, etc.)


  1. Distributor Technical Support
  • Analyze field samples using wet and instrumental methods
  • Perform analyses to aid in the determination of the composition of competitive products
  • Formulate product samples


  1. Technical Competence
  • Provide accurate and timely results
  • Suggest new procedures, techniques, instrumentation, etc. as needed
  • Keep aware of new developments, procedures, and instrumentation
  • Consultative with suppliers to obtain information necessary for job functions

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a metalworking product development role
  • 5 years minimum experience in formulating water dilutable metal removal products, metal cleaners & corrosion preventatives
  • Success in completing development projects(s) from concept to commercialization
  • Commercial success with above project(s) is preferred
  • Knowledge of and relationships with additive and component vendors serving the greater metalworking industry
  • Knowledge of cutting and grinding processes
  • Knowledge of metallurgy
  • Knowledge of the operating principles of relevant analytical instrumentation, as well as capabilities and limitations
  • Effectively communicate with customers, customer service, vendors, vendor technical support, etc., in person, on the telephone, and by email
  • Provide prompt and effective assistance when required by unplanned events
