Sr. Ink Chemist

This is an exciting new position to be working in the development of flexo and gravure inks.  Work directly with customers to tailor formulations for film substrates across a wide market.  Bring your passion for R&D and working with customers to this growing company!

As a Sr. Ink Chemist, you will be responsible for managing and executing Research & Development projects targeted at developing functional additive masterbatches for various thermoplastic applications.  This will include both new product development and optimization of current products with special emphasis on the latest technology in polymers and additives for plastics, polymer testing, and instrument technology.

You will:

  • Scout novel materials and characterize physical and chemical properties and review relevant scientific literature and patents to advance understanding as it relates to new product development and/or optimization of current products
  • Work with strategic partners on plastics additives, fillers, polymers, and colorant systems for the entire range of industries that the company serves
  • You will support development of new test methods and polymer analysis and maintain a specific area of expertise around one or more disciplines (e.g., polymer rheology, polymer degradation, PVC formulation, additive functionality, etc.)

What YOU Can Do For Us:

  • Deliver new products for successful growth in plastics markets
  • Positively lead and manage multiple global plastics development projects, as assigned technical reports and papers. Deliver findings to both technical and non-technical team members
  • Lead efforts to search and file patents in relation to new plastics products or developments
  • Contribute ideas for new products, innovation and growth within the plastics market
  • Perform prior art searches to understand if new discoveries are unique, novel and patentable
  • Operate processing equipment including mixers, extruders, compounders, injection molders, blow molders and cast film lines. Set up and optimize process conditions for output and quality
  • Use standard test and characterization equipment such as spectrophotometer, gloss meter, tensile tester, COF, FTIR, GC-MS/FID, DSC, TGA and Rheometer
  • Maintain knowledge of processing technology and trends. Propose and lead new equipment requisition and setup
  • Complete projects through commercialization by coordinating with multi-functional teams
  • Assist in product development efforts of colleagues
  • Seek colleague’s assistance in developing new product solutions
  • Participate in applicable trade shows professional industry associations
  • Understand global regulations and their impact on material selection for FDA, EU Food contact, and international food legislations
  • Visit customers (up to 15%) for technical exchanges, scale-up trials, or technical service
  • Proactively identify safety issues & work with EH&S to ensure a safe work environment

Salary

Job Requirements

Technical Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer or Material Science
  • Masters preferred, PhD desirable

Your Knowledge, Skills and Experience will include:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of thermoplastics, additives and colorants
  • Material exposure to both engineering and commodity resins
  • In-depth knowledge and hands on experience in the fundamentals of thermoplastics processing
  • Experience in plastic master batch formulation using colorants, additives, fillers and reinforcements
  • Familiarity with plastics testing, characterization and analytical analysis techniques
  • Broad knowledge of polymer structure property relationship evaluation, properties, blends/alloys and principles of polymerization
  • Materials science background to identify novel/atypical materials for potential use in plastics
  • Broad knowledge of FDA and EU food regulations related to packaging materials
  • Experience in color theory, measurement and instrumentation and the ability to explain color concepts including special effects
  • Understand safe handling of chemicals, and ability to identify potential safety hazards
  • Ability to manage and track multiple projects and activities
  • Ability to develop & execute project timelines to deliver results in a timely manner
  • Ability to communicate internally and externally both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate innovative concepts, generate prototypes, conduct pilot trials, and scale up to manufacturing
  • Cultural awareness and comfort in diverse groups with ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Results driven, competitive and self-reliant
