Sr. Materials Engineer

The Sr. Materials Engineer will have the following responsibilities:

  • Focus on advancing energy systems materials innovation through direct research and problem solving in the laboratory. Develop methods for material preparation as well as downstream battery fabrication and testing.  Coordinate and conduct daily research activities with other lab staff
  • Working within the current laboratory structure to develop new materials and methods. Interfacing with internal and external technical resources to conduct and direct research related to battery materials.  Communicating goals and achievements in a field that is entirely new to the company
  • Identify and develop materials innovation opportunities (idea generation). Review literature and contribute to innovative ideas (materials and materials processing)
  • Coordinate and conduct daily research activities related to energy systems including materials processing, battery construction, end-use testing and benchmarking of new materials
  • Process and analyzed experimental data
  • Preparing related reports, presentations, and potentially publications
  • Manage interfaces with other laboratory

  • PhD in Materials Science, Carbon Science, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
  • Up to 5 years research experience, preferably as an individual contributor in a graduate school or industry-specific laboratory
  • Current working knowledge of potential customer applications (energy storage systems) coupled with fundamental knowledge of electrochemistry, battery materials, battery fabrication and testing
  • Laboratory and research skills are required including design of experiment, equipment management and maintenance as well as communication and technical writing skills
  • Ability to be innovative, develop new materials and material processes, conduct experiments and test hypotheses, and solve technical problems
  • Ability to establish key priorities while working in a matrix organizational structure. Ability to manage consistently and with understanding across diverse cultures
  • Must be well organized, detail oriented, self-motivated, team player. Being able to lead by example and effectively communicate technical information by means understandable to all levels of the company is a must
