Summary:

The Sr. Product/Process Development Engineer is responsible for new product & process development & scale-up.  Will be a key member of the Plant & R&D leadership teams & the liaison between manufacturing operations & R&D.  Will work with R&D Researchers, Manufacturing Engineers, Environmental, Safety & other Operations staff to scale-up new products, conduct process & equipment reviews, & coordinate production of prototypes & field test quantities.  This engineer will be a key engineering resource for manufacturing & may help with process improvement & reliability initiatives.

Position reports to the Chief Technology Officer.

Responsibilities include:

  • Champion safety by modeling appropriate work behaviors and practices in all aspects of work
  • Act as the primary liaison between R&D and Manufacturing/Operations
  • Lead all scale-up processes for new product development and implementation, including process safety activities
  • Develop, manage and execute a portfolio of product and process development projects from initial testing to commercial scale up
  • Implement solutions to utilize or modify existing equipment, install new equipment or utilize contract manufacturers to produce developmental products for performance evaluation, beta testing and/or interim production
  • Define plant scale-up protocols in the development stages of R&D activities
  • Test equipment and process technology to determine manufacturing capability to produce new products or improve/enhance production of existing products
  • Develop process scope, equipment requirements, operating cost and capital cost for capital projects required for commercial production of new products or improved/enhanced production of existing products
  • Oversees QA/QC development for new products and process scale-up and transfer
  • Assure technicians are trained on new equipment and processes
  • Maintain process documentation, ensuring process changes are properly documented in the appropriate systems
  • Manage engineering contractors, toll manufacturers and contracts as required for new product development endeavors
  • Work with outside suppliers and provide technical oversight for purchase of additives and out-sourced products
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • B.S./M.S.  in Chemical Engineering; advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum 8 years of engineering experience in an industrial/chemical environment
  • Experience with Activated Carbon process technology (or similar industry) preferred but open to other industries
  • Scale-up and full-scale manufacturing experience in specialty chemicals technology & operations environment
  • Demonstrated experience driving new product growth initiatives through Operations & R&D Leadership
  • Proficient knowledge of distributed controls systems ideally both DCS & PLC’s
  • Ability to read, modify & interpret engineering drawings/blueprints
  • Ability to read & interpret technical documents, policy & procedural documents
  • Ability to write detailed reports & SOP’s
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely verbally and in writing; ability to effectively present material to audiences of varying technical backgrounds and experience
  • Must possess exceptional problem-solving skills, logical thinking & analytical skills
  • Ability to work with people of varied backgrounds
  • Ability to facilitate and reach group agreement on complex issues in a timely and effective manner
  • Ability to identify & resolve conflicts
  • High level of proficiency in all MS Office products including Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint
