Sr. Scientist, Coatings

The Sr. Scientist, Coatings will have the following responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct research to develop and commercialize innovative products for metal packaging coatings applications
  • Apply deep understanding of metal packaging coatings and regulatory requirements to develop and test new resin technologies that enable differentiated performance, reduced cost and increased efficiency
  • Determine fitness-for-use for specific metal packaging coatings applications and reduce these to fundamental resin characteristics using knowledge of coating structure-process-property relationships
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing, engineering, and QC organizations during product scale up and commercialization
  • Develop new technical literature to support new products or techniques
  • Serve as a resource for internal and external customers on market specific product and process technology
  • Establish peer level connect with the external technical community in order to maintain an up-to-date understanding of market dynamics, regulatory trends and competitive intellectual property
  • Follow all laboratory quality and safety standards
  • Oversee testing of coatings to industry standards
  • Support quality, health, and safety initiatives as they relate to formulation, material safety, and technical data sheets
  • Travel to customers to discover needs, match fitness for use characteristics with product offerings, and support the opportunity through qualification
  • Mentor and support development of technicians

Requirements:

  • MS/PhD Chemistry and 3 years of relevant technical experience is required, including a track record of leading technical projects in metal packaging coatings applications
  • Technical project leadership experience with proven track record of developing and executing metal packaging technology strategies
  • Downstream connect with can makers and brand owners in the metal packaging segment
  • Good understanding of the regulatory trends in the packaging segment and implications to developing the coatings
  • Strong background in formulation, application and testing of coatings
  • Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with and as a part of a cross-functional team
  • Experience with experimental design (DOE), formulation, and problem solving are desired
  • An understanding of chemical manufacturing as it relates to resin, polymers or coatings is desirable
  • Knowledge of waterborne and solvent borne coatings technology is highly preferred
  • Working knowledge of thermally cured coatings, i.e. coil coatings / laminates / baking enamels is required
  • Excellent judgment and relational abilities. Able to collaborate with peers of various technical backgrounds and fields of expertise to enable effective product development
  • Must demonstrate excellence around professional follow-through and achieving timely closure on issues and assignments
  • Quality assimilates new information
  • High level of motivation, initiative and sense of urgency
  • Flexible to provide first-hand presence and effective support in multiple labs and facilities
  • Complete fluency in English, including good verbal and written technical communications
