Sr. Scientist / Principal Scientist – Yogurt

We have an amazing opportunity on our Research & Innovation team, for a Principal Scientist, Yogurt.  This is a technical expert position within the Research & Innovation (R&DI) organization.  You will be responsible for leading R&D innovation and commercialization with an emphasis on dairy yogurt and other cultured products (may include non-dairy yogurt alternatives).

  • Leverage deep scientific expertise to support and build on the technical development and excellence of the Yogurt BU
  • Provide technical product and process leadership, coaching and expertise to other members of R&D as well as cross-functional team members including but not limited to Marketing, Operations, Engineering, Packaging and Quality Assurance
  • Facilitate and foster the ideation of new product possibilities as well as line extensions and/or product reformulations with an emphasis on establishing points of difference versus competitors, from a nutrition, quality and creativity standpoint
  • Plan, execute, and manage the development of prototypes in the lab, pilot plant and at production facilities. Maintain technical and experiment documentation
  • Provide oral and written progress updates to stakeholders and business leaders. Must be able to clearly articulate technical product information in a format that is understandable to non-technical audiences
  • Share and teach technical know-how on dairy/yogurt processing, nutrients (incorporation, handling…) and key ingredients such as dairy ingredients, hydrocolloids, fruit preps, etc.
  • Develop and manage collaborations with suppliers to leverage the potential of bringing in and integrating outside ideas and technical solutions
  • Network with global R&D community to share and bring in best practices from other parts of the world

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in food science, nutrition, or closely related field with at least 20 years of relevant progressive experience; or Master’s degree in food science, nutrition, or closely related field with at least 15 years of relevant progressive experience; or PhD degree in food science, nutrition, or closely related field with at least 10 years of relevant progressive experience
  • Your prior experience must include significant product development and/or research experience supporting dairy yogurt and/or cultured dairy products
  • You will have a demonstrated track record of successful commercialization of dairy yogurt and/or cultured dairy products that establish points of difference from existing products with consumers
  • You must demonstrate strong leadership / mentorship skills; experience in people development and team management is a plus
  • You will have exemplary technical skills focused on product formulation, ingredients, industrial processes and manufacturing practices
  • You will have demonstrated product development capabilities with successful in-market products that deliver against increasing consumer expectations on clean, pure, and simple ingredients
  • You will be articulate in sensory, consumer testing and ability create great tasting products
  • You will have strong understanding of consumer trends in ingredients and nutrition
  • You will have experience with food safety, HACCP, and quality regulations and programs required; working knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations
  • You will be passionate about creating, rapid prototyping, development and commercialization of ideas
  • You will have the ability to work autonomously to drive technical programs forward
