Technical Director, Adhesives

The Technical Director, Adhesives, will have the following responsibilities:

  • Maintain a high standard of safety performance including conducting all job duties in a safe manner and following the handling, storage and disposal of materials in accordance with environmental regulations
  • Maintain understanding of current and targeted PSA tape applications, including the performance requirements of these applications, and the unmet needs of users by working with Marketing and outside partners to identify and implement solutions for meeting these unmet needs
  • Manage group resources to ensure NPD projects deadlines are met
  • Promote a strong culture of collaboration within the group and with peers across the key functions to ensure program timings and goals are met
  • Employ a strategy of Open Innovation by building and leveraging relationships with suppliers, customers, universities, and other technology partners to meet unmet needs through the co-development of technology. Work with Marketing to utilize Voice of the Customer (VOC) methods
  • Work with the Director of Innovation to establish business processes where needed to improve project execution, improve the rate and quality of innovation and reduce inefficiencies. Ensure the researchers follow the requirements of the phase-gate process for new product development, including utilizing project management methods
  • Ensures researchers maintain complete records of research work, including closing report documentation
  • Work with PD&I researchers and Marketing to design and develop new test methods based on end-user use of the products. Build test method prototypes for improving the speed and quality of developing new products.  Reduce the time for testing associated with time-intensive test methods
  • Ensures statistics are developed for test equipment and are reported as part of the test results
  • Ensures laboratory processes are in place to meet requirements for Job Safety Analysis, operating procedures, ISO, Preventative Maintenance, and any other processes needed to maintain a high quality of results
  • In conjunction with Engineering, Facilities Management, and external contractors ensures building maintenance needs are met
  • Establishes the operating and capital budgets for laboratory and building needs

Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Engineering, or Polymer Science
  • 15+ years’ direct experience in PSA tapes new product development, technical support and lab operations
  • Track record of developing and commercializing new products on time and within budget, as well as experience with the use of new product development methodologies including project management, phase-gate, ideation, Voice of the Customer (VOC), Design of Experiments (DOE), IP management, literature and patent research, and working with Sales and Marketing to launch new products
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to define the problem, evaluate options and converge on a solution quickly
  • Understands the financial aspects of developing and scaling up new products
  • Ability to think strategically and to influence and impact strategy
  • Ability to lead and inspire team and to build a strong collaborative environment within the group. This position with oversee a lab manager, lab supervisor, 3 TS&D chemists, and 9 technicians
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Results oriented, with strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to champion change and drive improvement in others
