Technical Services Specialist

The Technical Services Specialist will have the following responsibilities:

*Provide and maintain a safe, accident-free laboratory environment

*Plan and execute laboratory application projects for specific business needs and initiatives as well as those for customers as submitted by the sales team including but not limited to conducting a rheological analysis and checking the performance of a company gum blend in a specific application, or developing an entirely new texture ingredient system

* Participate in and help to lead customer production trials that are focused on the implementation of a company product.

*Effectively manage projects by planning, designing, and scheduling experiments.  Ensure proper execution of experiments through effective use of time and resources.  Generate and evaluate data.  Draw conclusions and use them to design the next set of experiments as needed. 

*Design and execute experiments in the lab or in the pilot plant to determine how specific hydrocolloids, or systems of hydrocolloids, behave in specific food systems. 

*As necessary, supervise the execution and completion of projects assigned to Lab Technicians.  Provide guidance to Lab Technicians with respect to overall performance and career development in the form of performance coaching.

*Working independently on long term project assignments. Responsible for completing assigned projects in a timely fashion using an appropriate experimental design and reporting status of projects as they progress with a final summary in the company designated data base system.

*Prepare and/or complete specifications, nutritional information, and MSDS documentation for new products and processes.

*Serve as technical support within company by: answering technical hot line, responding to technical review, and participating in customer sales calls in support of sales.  Provide leadership for method development, product troubleshooting, customer audits, and maintaining the integrity of the Quality Management System in support of Quality Assurance.  Provide trouble shooting support, process scale-up and transfer, process optimization and training in support of Manufacturing.

*Preparing and presenting information at technical meetings, trade shows, and customer visits. Generate literature and attend trade shows in support of marketing. Provide in-house and external training to internal and external customers on the science, technology and application of hydrocolloid systems.

*Demonstrate intellectual leadership by staying abreast of recent scientific hydrocolloid findings that pertain to relevant technical areas. Apply creativity along with the scientific method to generate new learning’s that can be used to develop new and successful products and processes. Identify and address capability gaps in terms of knowledge, equipment and facilities and work with management to address these gaps.

*Protect company intellectual property and where applicable, assist in the generation and maintenance of patents.  Maintain a working knowledge of all phases of customer-based product development. Maintaining a legible and organized laboratory book of all assigned projects.

*Responsible for the daily upkeep of the laboratory (including the pilot plant) and all applicable equipment.



*Minimum of Bachelors of Science in Food Science, Chemistry, Engineering or a related technical discipline with one (1) or more years of relevant experience including internships.
