Applications Chemist - Thermoset SMC

We are seeking an experienced professional in the realm of Fiberglass reinforced plastics utilizing SMC processes to join our dynamic applications team. In this role, you will be responsible for creating customized samples, engaging with customers, delivering presentations, and determining optimal formulations for specific applications. As a key member of our Applications Development Group, you will collaborate with a team consisting of Mechanical Engineers, a technical expert, and now, a Chemist. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including an SMC machine, presses, and advanced analytical tools, you will have the opportunity to engage directly with customers and deliver technical presentations. Your work will involve collaborating with the Synthesis Team to apply resin chemistry in customer processing methods, primarily focusing on SMC, BMC, TMC, RTM, and processes such as Pultrusion and Filament Winding.

Responsibilities:

  • Implementing new resin advancements into composite applications, in alignment with the synthesis group.
  • Leading and executing projects related to unsaturated polyesters and vinyl ester resins to drive business growth and enhance production efficiency and quality.
  • Developing and customizing products to meet customer requirements, and providing technical assistance to clients and production teams.
  • Conducting testing and reporting on UPR/VE resin formulations to support designated projects.
  • Collaborating with sales representatives and customers to define performance criteria and experimental approaches.
  • Creating, testing, and analyzing composite materials for high-temperature applications.
  • Interpreting and communicating results, including direct presentations to customers as needed.
  • Performing equipment troubleshooting, adjustments, and maintenance to ensure accurate testing outcomes.

Salary Range:

$55,000 - $75,000

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of the chemical processes and equipment used to manufacture unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester polymers.
  • BS in chemistry – minimum.
  • 5 years’ composites application experience.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Travel approximately 15% of time to customers.
  • Strong planning and organization skills.
  • Functional knowledge of UPR/VE resins with emphasis on composite applications.
  • Strong knowledge of the chemical processes and equipment used to manufacture unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester polymers.
  • Practical experience with customer processes and ability to transfer that information into a lab environment.
  • Knowledge of customer base for both unsaturated polyester / vinyl ester and advanced composites.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within program management guidelines and meet deadlines – reassigning priorities as necessary.
  • Strong knowledge of current FRP fabrication processes.
  • Strong team related skills including good communication skills, good group interaction, individual accountability, and respectful attitude.
  • Detail oriented with excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, problem solve, prioritize workload, and multi-task.
  • Basic computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs-some knowledge of SAP is required.
  • Ability to represent entire product line to selected group of customers.
  • Knowledge of statistical quality control (SQC) and statistical process control (SPC) method.
