UV Coatings Chemist

The UV Coatings Chemist will plan and lead multiple technical development projects and the commercialization process based on project objectives and timelines; projects are typically moderate to difficult in scale and complexity.  Communicate results and conclusions to Technical, Business and Operations groups as necessary.

  • Applies an expert understanding of company, industry, and competitor technologies, application methods, products, and manufacturing processes regarding the research and development of coating formulations
  • Reads and interprets patents and regulations, examines new product concepts and technology, and determines how to improve or utilize technologies. Utilizes and promotes the use of design tools including DOE and DfLSS methodologies
  • Interprets and applies department policies and procedures to ensure compliance with principles, practices, applicable laws, rules, and regulations; work safely and maintain a neat laboratory area
  • Oversees and/or serves as the primary contact for highly technical and complex questions and concerns from plants, research professionals, quality control, customers and other internal and external parties regarding development, applications quality assurance and related programs and services
  • Will be responsible for providing high level expertise in analyzing, testing and formulating of new products and improvements to existing products and will also be responsible for multiple smaller development projects
  • Serve as a team member for moderate-difficult projects to provide technical management and direction to product development, quality control, manufacturing processes, and other operations; may lead sub-sets of smaller projects

  • BS in Chemistry or Polymers and Coatings
  • Broad chemistry and polymer knowledge
  • Minimum 5 years’ of industrial chemistry experience, preferably within the paint and/or coatings industry
  • Utilizes technical project management concepts
  • Wide breadth of technology and raw material experience with primary focus in radiation cure technologies. Direct experience in OEM floor coatings a benefit
  • Proven understanding and use of chemistry to trouble shoot and develop coating solutions
  • Commercialization success over multiple technology areas. Customer specialist, primary technical contact.  Basic in radiation cure (UV) technology experience.  Applied commercialization principles and practices
  • Microsoft Office applications knowledge (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); and other applicable applications such as Statistical design software (Minitab)
  • Proficient in coating applications knowledge and technique over a wide range of technology and equipment. Successful line design with equipment vendors and customer
  • Strong in solving technical problems and recommending solutions. LSS/DfLSS proficiency a plus.  Successful management of multiple technicians / lower level chemists
  • Good communication skills – this person will have to interact with manufacturing personnel, executive team members, and customers. Will need to be able to relate with all of them.  Collaboration is a big part of their culture.  Ability to develop and present detailed complex presentations to upper management and customers
